This post is for this coin:

N#22576

I have owned an example of this coin for a while, but just recently looked it up in the Numista database. Now that I have done that, I am starting to wonder if my coin is real or not.

Here are some physical parameters:

Weight = 1.38 grams

Diameter = 18.2 mm

Non-magnetic

Orientation: Coin

Color: Brown

Date: 1676

Very crude die work.

Here are some pictures:

Concerns:

1. Coin orientation (Numista webpage says it should be medal orientation)

2. Reverse legend has “NAR” instead of “NOR”

3. Obverse legend: no dots between “V G D DAN”

4. Obverse legend: “DAN” appears to be spelled as follows: backwards D, then a dot, then AN

My coin looks similar to the picture in the valuation table for the 1677 coin (same brown color; same crude die work). The picture at the top of the Numista webpage looks to be gray in color and has much better die work.

Should a coin that is less than 30% look gray or brown? Presumably, the other element mixed in with the silver is copper…

So what do you think? Real or not? If it isn't real, would it be a contemporary counterfeit, or a modern fake?

The lions in the coat of arms do not look right with their front legs pointed that much down. Also the mintmaster's mark on reverse looks way too different in my opinion. And I also have never personally seen this coin with the misspelling “NAR”, but that on its own is not enough to say its not legit.

There were many inconsistencies in the different stamps made in this period, but the ones you have showed here makes me think it is not a legit coin.

It could still be a contemporary counterfeit, but I would have to look more into it.

Interrested in nordic numismatic history, and european history overall.

Always looking for damaged, holed or even unidentifyable coins.

I have this coin too, its fairly common, being a low face value billon coin. They were crudely made and hammered. I think its real.

If you look closely both of our coins have the coppery brown colour of a low silver billon coin. My one is a year later too.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
