We are getting new coins in Egypt! 🇪🇬
A recent statement from the Ministry of Finance confirms that the Egyptian Treasury and Mint Authority is moving forward with plans to modernize circulating coinage, while keeping all existing denominations in use as legal tender.
The update includes improvements in technical specifications and revisions to metal compositions—particularly for the 1 pound coin—to reduce production costs and limit melting and illegal trading.
Most notably, a new 2 pound coin will be introduced for the first time, aiming to strengthen the currency structure and make everyday transactions more efficient. Meanwhile, smaller denominations (25 and 50 piastres) will remain in circulation to support small-change needs.
The initiative also focuses on increasing coin availability in the market, especially in high-demand areas, as part of a broader strategy to improve efficiency, sustainability, and accessibility of coins for daily use.
The statement was accompanied by images of the proposed coin designs. While it is not yet confirmed whether these represent the final approved versions, they provide a clear indication of the intended direction.
From my point of view, the designs look very appealing and well-executed, and I genuinely hope they are adopted in the final release.
