Need Help to Identify a Potosi 1 Real COB [opgelost]

I got this Potosi 1 real cob f a local dealer. I want to find out when it was issued.

The assayer mark seems to be a C over a B or R, and this page suggests an early issue of Philip II:

while this book gives another  probability of a Philip III issue:

Furthermore, only a small portion of the king’s name can be seen at 4 o’clock on the obverse, and to my eyes the shield can be for either king:

Could anyone give me some advice?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Weight 3.7g

Diameter 23mm

I lean and am fairly certain Philip II. Notice the “crown” above the shield is attached to the shield. While during Philip III reign there usually was some separation between the “crown” and the shield. The C represents the assistant to the assayer and was fairly common. These crudely made  cob coins are routinely difficult to identify with absolute certainty due the nature of their manufacture and simple wear over the years. Yours still has very nice details remaining under the circumstances and is a keeper in my mind.

Thank you very much for the information.  It is indeed very nice for a cob coin.
And another question, I want to add it to my collection on this site. Which grade should I choose?

Everything is relative and others may disagree but for this type and under the circumstances, I see this example as very fine.

Edit. Looking at Numistas page for your example, my opinion is that your coin is a better example than the existing example on the page as yours has much more details and identifiers. The page itself could use some editing as well as your example has identifiers not currently listed.

Is there any missing identifiers that my coin features? There is already a P-C variant on the page. Or may I edit my photos to make the background white then replace the existing pictures?

I did not see the line with a C. Working from my phone which is difficult. If you see that line then no editing needed but I would recommend attempting to replace the photos on the existing page with yours. It is up to the referee to accept or reject that change. I hope it is approved.

Thank you very much. I uploaded the photos and they were approved.

It is fantastic to have a coin in hand that shows on the page.

It may be the best $75 I have spent in this year.

So happy for you. I love these cob coins and am always on the lookout for them especially in the condition your example is in. Not easy to do. Great find.

Great find.

It was a crude piece of silver surrounded by shiny modern proofs. When I saw it I thought it was the real gem, because I am also interested in Spanish colonial coinage. Although it was the first time I  saw an early cob, I took it immediately as I knew for such a coin $75 was a price too good to miss.

Actually the details look sharper in hand than in the pictures. I wonder if I should submit it to a grading service for labeling and preservation.

Personally, I would not and do not as a rule as I am perfectly happy with raw coins which I preserve myself. It is certainly slab worthy but that is your choice and you have to decide if it is worth the cost and the right choice for you. There is no right or wrong whatever you choose.  Good luck with it.

Edit - I also took the liberty to request an update on the respective page weight from 3.4g to 3.7g and entered the missing diameter information as 23MM. Waiting for referee approval.
