Do you have any coins with graffiti?

Hello everyone!

I’d like to share this pretty interesting bulgarian 100 leva ( N#6450 ) with a bunch of graffiti on it:

I got it a while ago for melt (when it was around 2€/g before the huge spike to 3) and it intrigued me a bit.

It looks like someone took a screwdriver and wagged it back and forth on the coin and also scratched it.

But the interesting part is for me that the graffiti feels quite personal, like someone really hated Boris on the coin (as seen on the extreme damage on his portrait, totally reasonable hate).

I’ve been tempted (and had the chance) to exchange it for a much better example but it just feels so… I don’t know how to describe it properly in english, perhaps individually resentful? It just makes it worth it to keep so that this person’s anger doesn’t disappear in a crucible and actually gets recognised and remembered.

Anyways, do you have any interesting graffitied pieces as personal as this one? Please share if you do!

:)

Thanks for tagging me, @rsirian1 —

The Tsar of Bulgaria suffered quite a bit… Beside the tool marks, the graffiti, I suppose, are written in Bulgarian. Perhaps someone who knows the Cyrillic alphabet better than I do would be able to get something out of this, though there seems to be only two or three letters.

Is this possibly an antimonarchical piece?? Unlikely, but possible. Someone who knows the “shorthand” used at the time would be able to help us. A comparison with the current political context would be the use of “8647”. I suspect this will become meaningless to almost everyone in a decade or so from now…

EDIT —

As for the pieces I do have, there is a 1797 UK tuppence which was scratched very lightly with someone's name in the 1880s. It took me months to see the graffiti until a ray of sun hit at exactly the right angle. By the 1880s, such a huge coin was a curiosity, not any longer used in commerce (and copper had been demonetized anyway). I'll try to find it in my boxes…

I also have a colonial Mexican 2 reales scratched with someone's name in Toronto. I can't find the pictures right now…

Interesting, perhaps a bulgarian member can tell us more!

As for the reason of the graffiti, Boris the third was a nazi ally, that probably ups the chances of it being hate towards him and not just someone trying out a new knife.

By the way, what does ”8647” mean? I haven’t heard this term before.

This Kruger Florin has the erstwhile old Boer with a tophat and smoking a pipe.

Its very weathered and old scratching and almost certainly “Trench art” from the 2nd Anglo Boer war (1899 - 1902). Likely done by a British Empire soldier. A unique and interesting piece.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Here is rather ugly 1850 Swiss franc.

It would be a nice coin, but for the enormous hole and the inscription.

‘Liberty’ in English, allows of various speculations.

I found a picture of my tuppence but can't remember the name that was scratched (I'm stuck with “Dumbarton” in my head but I know this is not it). It's been stored somewhere in my not-yet-organized-new-office, now that I have a better one for my collection. If I remember correctly, however, the date is July 27th 1882 (the year doesn't show on this picture):

Interesting that you can make out a date, perhaps you can identify the exact person if you figure out the name!

That’s a very fun coin, not too shabby art either!

Somewhere I have an old £1 coin where Elizabeth II has had “IRA” or “RIRA” (think the latter) carved quite significantly into her. Not quite sure where it is, feels like a while since I've seen it 🤔
