1990 1 pfennig question

Hello all, I have the above-mentioned coin but it is not the usual copper-plated steel, but looks brass or other plating with no signs of copper plating. Is there a record of this anywhere or anyone can explain why?

I think they are or better say were gold plated. I heard in Germany they used to get goldplated as lucky coins! I have received 2 of them, but in much better "plating" condition as a gift from a collector here :)
