After thinking out how I was going to approach recommending the 3 most important changes I would like to see in Numista to save everyone's time in searching for coins to trade for, I came to a startling revelation. No matter what I or anyone suggests, it will not be implemented because Numista is not a viable commercial product. No more major efforts will be invested in it until or if Krause decides to buy it. One way or another we all will be paying to use this site.
After unloading all that, here are my 3 suggestions to save preparation time in developing a trade:
1. Put up a flag next to a person's user name if they have not logged in for 45 days; or whatever period of time that is appropriate. I tried to find a particular coin which only one person had. Unfortunately, there appears to have been no activity in that account since becoming a member in 2010. This is all too typical.
2. It is time for the users to put grades on their coins to be exchanged. This can be done with the comments box which I and probably less than 10% of members currently do, but it needs a field of its own. I am totally in the dark when looking for vf 19th century coins from France and the UK because of the plethora of low grade specimens. People can learn to grade. Give them a chance. They will at least approximate the true grade.
3. Give users the option to edit out the checkmarks. For me this would mean reducing a persons exchange list from possibly 1000+ coins to a more manageable list of 20-30 coins. I do not need to see the coins I already have.
The 3 changes above will make Numista an even better database than it is currently.
They only work if you have already made some 'wishes' I think.
That is the 'add a criterion' example of marking coins you don't wish to collect - I selected Rome (ancient) so that in any future swaps they are removed, when I click on 'Remove X coins'.
https://en.numista.com/forum/topic19630.html
Halfway down (Posted: 6-Jun-2013, 07:25PM) that topic I showed what wishes look like on a swap page. The 'add a criterion' is the quick way to mark many coins (either not wished or also wished for) - they can also be ticked individually ...
Here is the page of your exchange coins, and I show the top of the page where I highlighted the 'Hide X coins' I mentioned.
Then further down I show a different part of the same page, with the hearts and crosses (from where I marked previously whether I wanted a coin or not) ...
so just in that section of the screen are shown Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovenia, Somalia, South Africa - then, to the left of the date, the first column shows coins I already have (circle or ! or tick). To the left of that is the wishes column for the coins I don't already have. It shows that there is nothing (no heart or cross) for the Somalia coin.
Then I click on that coin and on lower left I highlighted the section I mentioned earlier, where I can individually mark a coin page (rather than by 'add a criterion' method). As I want that coin I will click in the 'I wish to get this coin' box, so any future swap will put a red heart on the coin page.
Then finally I can go to the top of the page and click on the 'Hide X coins' and the list now shows ...
where Romania and Saudi Arabia now only show the country name, the Somalia coin now has a red heart, and only just red heart coins are displayed.
Then if I was making a swap it would be much easier to look for (select/tick) my wishes.
