I have a US penny that has the same thing on it as you described. I took it to my local coin dealer and he said yes it is a error and that is is worth a few bucks. So if they are the same it is an error, but I don't know what the value would be. He said that the mint mark had been knocked off during the minting process. Hope this helps.
Here I made the scan slightly bigger but it does look like an error coin. Does the weight match up with the weight listed for this coin....as always error coins are worth more but how much more I am not sure .... very nice coin though.

swap list under reconstruction!
Citeer: redsmithstudiosDoes anyone have any ideas?
Have you gotten it under a loupe yet? If not try and do so, look for the tell-tale tool marks (being a copper smith you understand). Try the Numista member derf - this seems to be his field.

Thank you for the vote of confidence ...
From what little I can tell from the larger image, it almost looks like the mint mark was removed. Would need to see a very detailed scan of just the mint mark area...
