I just found a 1987 US penny BUT the mint mark is "S" has any one ever came across this before or do I have a fake. I do know that the "S" mint mark stopped after 1974 or so I thought. Any information would greatly be appreciated.
I have coins from the USA from 2011 with an S mintmark for the San Francisco mint, and the Lincoln commemorative cents were issued with S and D mintmarks......
I am certain that your coin is a proof. Proof coins escape from mint sets and make into circulation, and I find one or two in my pocket change each year. Any premium value they had as proofs is often destroyed by all the damage the coins receive while circulating, so your cent may only be worth one cent now.
you might check the internet for identifying "proof coins".
first things to look at:
Proof coins have frosted / more-or-less dull upper parts of detail while only (!) the background has
a mirror-like polished look
Who wants to buy my Canadian cents? I need to dispose it because it's dead. The Canadian cent has formally ceased circulating in the country to the north. That move has rekindled a discussion locally that has been going on for decades.

I'd be pretty happy if I found a proof penny in circulation. Never found one myself.
I wouldn't mind paying a nickel for one of these. It's certainly worth more than a penny.
