Hi!

Could you help me to grade and value these two pennies? Which one shall I keep?

1848

1851

Thanks,

Antoine

Love them! Would you want to add one to our swap (#2 ideally).
Maybe, I'm waiting for values and I will see 8)

The first one is an overrate and worth about £7 ($10). Source

The second one is worth about $45, from my experience with these coins (though the coin dealer I go to would sell it to me for $10).
Ok, thanks :)

I've just seen, it's a 1848/7

I've added a better and daylight picture of the 1851 penny (and removing the dirt on the Britannia's wheel)

What are the far and near colon variety?

I have not looked on that site but I think it will show. Also I just now looked in my coin book and it shows the difference - in my picture I added the arrows ...

In my image, the coin on the left shows if the : is the same distance from FID as well as DEF then it is near colon variety (like your 1851), so the far variety has : more further away than yours.  :)

Ah! ":" is named "colon" ?
I wasn't knowing it so it's why I didn't understood ;)

Yes, a : is colon and ; is semi-colon. Actually I just now looked at your 1848 coin and that does have the far colon. So you have both varieties, on different dates.  :8D

where near colon is shown on an 1855 coin, and far colon is below it on an 1854 coin ...
