Is coin collecting a male dominated hobby?

I frequently trade on Ebay and have gone through the collection of lot of Numista members too. I have been dealing and interacting with lot of coin collectors of late and I realized almost all of them are males. Is it a sheer coincidence? Also, I would like to understand the reaction of people when you tell them about your hobby. Do people take you and your hobby seriously?

Request your views, guys.   :)

Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras
I resent that, I prefer to be called a yobbo nerd. People are usually curious about what coins come from where.

Nerd's a compliment, shows dedication to your field  ;)

Generally it is because I like Physics, Maths and Geology, not because of coin collecting.

At least 90% of those that I have met through coins are male. I have been at this for over 40 years. However, during the past 5 years there seems to be more females involved with coin collecting. The females that I have met through coins are usually selling coins or involved with their children's (both boys and girls) collections. Although the young mothers did not collect coins before they had children, they seem to understand the value of coin collecting for their children. I hope to see more young boys and girls get serious about coin collecting. My children never collected coins but would always bring me home anything they found interesting. I hope my grand kids become collectors of coins or stamps. I have one little grand daughter who loves to save and count her coins. Maybe she will pursue poppa's hobby. If she does, I will support her and help her get a good start.
I have about a 40% female user rate on my sites facebook page,

and I would say about 1/3 of my sales are to women.  Although many of the sales are mothers buying for their childeren.

Coin Hoarder,

Loved the way you are managing your Facebook page and website.

Why don't you conduct some contests for Numista members too?

Just a suggestion. :)

The current contest I have going is for anyone.
It is a givaway to get people active on our new forum, not just to my facebook members.
Numista members are included if interested.

I should however offer a members discount in store for members here.
I love this site and what it has to offer.

Thanks for the suggestion mayank.
I will indeed contact the Numista admin and see if I can arrange something.

Cheers!!

Brother,

Do you ship internationally? On your website you have only mentioned US and Canada shipping. Do you sell on ebay? If yes, whats your ebay ID?

I do ship International, the prices are shown before checkout based on your location.
Where are you from?

I also do sell on Ebay, but it is mostly the lower grade stuff I won't put in the store, just to move it.
