Need help to identify trade token I found [opgelost]

Hi, I am a newbie to coin collecting and happened upon this token in one of the lots I purchased and haven't been able to find anything on it. I was hopping someone out there may be able to help me out any thing to go off of would be helpful including good research references for looking up tokens. Here are some pictures of the front and back.

Thank you in advance for your help

This is a trade token. It's used for getting goods from a certain person or company, but the coin could only be spent with that certain person or company. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about these tokens:

"Generally they have a merchant's name or initials, sometimes a town and state, and a value, such as "good for 5¢" (or other denomination) legend somewhere on the token."

I have no idea if the G on the coin is of a town, company, or person, though. Hope that helps a bit.

Edit: Further reading reveals that these were most commonly used from 1870 - 1920. Here's the link in case I missed anything: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Token_coin

Patrick that was awesome info thank you very much! At least I have a time line to go with now. Hopefully there is somewhere or someone that will tie the "G" to a specific area or something of that sort so that I can have a better knowledge of this token. I really do appreciate the help and I will definitely look over that link you gave me and see if it leads to somewhere else. I guess for now would it be safe to call this a "1870-1920 "G" 5¢ Trade Token" or do you have a better idea for a name for it or what collectors would refer to this as?

Much Appreciated,

I've honestly never seen one like this, as I'm pretty new to collecting myself. But I would probably also classify it as the way you put it. Hope you can find more info on it. Glad I could help even a little.

There's a specialist site for them I've seen somewhere before, I'll look it up and see if I can find it.
Ah here it is

Thanks I'll have to take a look at that site
