Thanks...I cleaned it electrolytically to a point where the script could finally be read and then stopped.  I wrote the process up in "Science Scope" October 2004, pp. 22-25 if anyone is interested in this. I assume that it is online somewhere. The greatest danger is someone trying to clean it up too much and so I suggest they try it on modern day copper coins to get a feel for how fast the process goes.
