Hello all, and to those who are most interested.
What are your thoughts on the current arrangement of the Roman coins? Information consistency, accuracy and etc.
Is the referee currently active?
I have been collecting and studying a number of types and series for just under a year now. Yes, a very new collector here. But I find our 'numista' catalog to be tough to use.
Ancient coins in general seem to seem to be in need of a "Czar" of some sort.
I'm purchasing the books I need. Just would like to enter my collection here.
Thoughts?
Cheers,
Ard
Hi, I am also a new member and I have a coin which isn't listed in Numista. It is a bit difficult for me to input a info for it. I have done some research and info is below so somebody can input.
[ Ref Papia 2 denarius
L. Papius. 45 B.C. AR Denarius. Head of Juno Sospita right / Wolf right, placing stick on fire; on r., eagle fanning flames; in exergue, L. PAPIVS; above, CELSVS III VIR. Syd 964, Cr472/1.]
In Numisa catalog is listed only "Papia 3"
Thanks
Future is build on the history therefore we must know the real one.
I have posted a coin to be added, some time ago, and have had no reply from the referee, whoever that may be. Still waiting to see if it is to be added, or not and why.
I for one, an unhappy with the way the Ancient coins are handled. I added a coin over a year ago and it was declined because the coin wasn't good enough to present a pleasing picture. I understand wanting nice pictures but sometimes with Ancient coins you have to use what you have. The coin languished in pending for almost a year until a sympathetic referee decided to allow it. I understand that referees have a life outside of numista, but a year is a bit much.
I think we need some people who have an understanding of Ancient coins, and who can see the big picture and a proper way to organize them. I started to try to add coins from my Sears catalog. But some people wanted to use Roman Imperial Coins instead. I have heard it said, "Sears is practical, RIC is scientific," and I have found that so.
1. I think we need an agreed upon cross reference system. Either we use RIC and add in Sears, or we use Sears and add in RIC numbers. Of course this only works so far because there are coins that are not in the catalogs, but a framework should help us.
2. We need clearer division, there is a bunch of stuff in Rome (ancient). If the catalog were more complete it would be huge. I think Republic should be broken out, maybe the Imperium Galliarum also, etc. Much like Phoenician cities was for the Greek coin.
Their loss. Nothing like holding a coin that you know was in a pocket/purse over 1700 years ago. I have coins that could have been held by a famous Roman, Genghis Khan, or a Moghul Raja. Not that hard to come, actually.
