World coins chat: Pakistan

2 berichten
Pakistan is a country in south Asia between Iran, Afghanistan and India. It is the 6th most populous country in the world with a population of 209 million.

The Indus River runs through the country and has been the site of many ancient civilisations in antiquity. In the 19th century, it became part of British India. The name Pakistan was first coined in the 1930's as an acronym for the predominantly Muslim regions of Punjab, Afghania, Khyber, Sindh and BaluchisTAN. Furthermore, 'Pak' means 'pure' in Urdu so Pakistan could be translated as 'land of the pure'. India was partitioned in 1947, with the Muslim population uniting into Pakistan, which until 1971 also included East Pakistan, present-day Bangladesh. The partition of India was accompanied by large population transfers and multiple wars over Kashmir, which still today is disputed territory.

In 1971 a liberation war resulted in the independence of Bangladesh, with the aid of archrival India. Pakistan has often faced challenges of political and ethnic strifes, but it's also currently sees a substantial development of its economy. However, most people still live in poverty.

Currency

After insependence, the Pakistani Rupee replaced the British Indian Rupee in 1948. It stayed a non-decimal currency, divided in 16 Annas each of 3 Pie, until 1961. It has since been subdivided in 100 Paise, but inflation has made Paise coins obsolete.

In 1948 the Pakistani Rupee was worth around $0.30, dropping to $0.09 by 1973. In 2015 104Rs buy one US Dollar.

Coins

Pakistani coins are easy to find, especially the decimal coins often appear in bargain bins. In 1948, a non-decimal series was introduced from 1 Pie to 1 Rupee. In the 1950's a second series was added.

In 1961 a decimal series of 1, 5 and 10 Pice was minted, with the spelling changing to Paisa/Paise already the next year. Current coins in circulation are the 1, 2, and 5 Rupees.

Great start. I wonder why there is no discussion or movement in response to this post.
