Victoria Gothic Crown 1847- very large copy ! What is it ?

I know what it is in so much as the Victorian Gothic Crown and in a proof-like finish in a nice presentation case, but a large plaque or medallion.
What I don't know is everything else. Who might have produced it as there is no CoA or name on the case..Pinches, Danbury, London Mint ?
Is it a 'Collector's ' item, a limited edition ?
Any idea of the metal ? There is no silver hallmark on the rim but it could be silver plated to give that proof look.
Any information would be appreciated.
Diameter approx 88mm, weight 388g, thickness 9mm. I put the 1c and 1p coins there to give you an idea of size.
Thanks
Brian.

I also have one - I have had it many years before that 2013 reply.
I can not find out where mine was made, and also would like to know, so I can get another!

Thanks for the link to the earlier post, it's one I hadn't found after endless google clicks !
I will be keeping this for myself as its a bit 'different' to the normal but if I ever see another …..

Thanks
Brian.
Have you tried contacting the royal mint?
I hadn't thought about the Royal Mint as the case doesn't have their logo on it but it's a thought. I suppose they have to license the engraving rights so might be able to tell me some thing.
Cheers
Brian.
Let us know how you get on, I am also after this coin/medallion and would like to know its origins.

Would either of you care to share how much you paid for this beauty? I think I'd like one too.

I wonder if it isn't a part of the engraving process? I'm pretty sure that I've read that the master models from which the dies are created are made from oversized plaster pieces which are then scaled down to production sized master dies from which the actual production models are created. Plaster models would be fragile so I guess it's conceivable that models were made in more robust materials to circulate among the decision makers?

Although if that were the case we would see examples from other series and yeah, the case would surely carry the logo. Perhaps it's nothing more than a really nice tribute to one of the world's most beloved coins.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

I would quite happily tell you what it cost me if I could. It was just one case amongst a group of silver proofs and commemoratives and year sets that I bought at a local auction house. The whole batch was a bargain at £160.
My first thought was that it was one of those famous "must have collector items", the type where the hype and advertising is better than the product ! But then I thought it was just too big for that and assumed a quick google would yield results….still looking !
If I can find out anything else then I will post up the findings.

Cheers
Brian.
the only result that comes up in google is Zac's post. :O

Hi
The style of the crown on this coin is not correct for any of the English coins of Victoria 1837-1901.
I suggest searching for a coin of the Empire, most likely India,
See the following link:

I have one of these too... I tried to research it, found a page on chards but no info...
I emailed them directly and they still couldn't give any more information but did say they thought it was silver.
(It passes the neodymium magnet test for silver but its not conclusive)

A contact of mine seems to recall coincraft selling this (or something similar)
I'll do a bit of searching later on and update if I find anything more.

Very nice - always wondered where mine came from.

What is on the other side of that leaflet I wonder?

So I have 1 of only 970 minted. Thanks :)
