For the checklist in our personal coin lists I believe there are only boxes for VG, F, VF, XF, UNC...
I would like to see G added before VG and AU added after XF. That would really encompass the majority of the coins we will see, and I don't think there is any reason to expand beyond that. There is a BIG difference between XF and UNC, so to me adding AU is the most important.
If this is the wrong location for this post, please let me know and I'll try again. :)
I highly agree for the lowest grade. Even in French we can name it AB.
However, for the same reason there may have an issue with higher grades in French. SUP seems to be the best grade available, but maybe adding SPL may help this way. Need to ask the French side about this idea.

I usually use XF+ on the one side, and my own invention - CRAP coin on the other (CRAP coin - so damaged or coroded that I offer 5 of them for one VF common coin)
Also, grading is realtive - some czechoslovakia communist coins in UNC have so many scratches on them that some would grade them XF already. On the other side, some old coins can be rated higher because there are just virtually none (or they are very, very rare) coins in UNC or XF condition.
For me everything is OK, and the French side is likely to agree with new grades like you did. AB would be equivalent to G and SPL is finally better than SUP so AU or AUNC would become an equivalent to SPL.
However a new suggestion appeared as a complement to your suggestion. Why not creating in the right side a new column for BU/FDC? The actual UNC column would be renamed as actually named BU in French, so there will be an UNC column and a BU/FDC column for both languages.

I absolutely agree that everyone could have their own opinion as to what grade their coins are, which could differ from one person to the next. US coins are relatively easy to coin people because of accepted resources like PCGS Photo Grade, which is free for everyone to use without paid membership. With world coins there are just so many, that I can't imagine there is a consolidated resource to use so we basically need to make our best guess. Honestly as long as people are making their best educated guess, that's all we can ask for. As for adding a low "Good" level or equivalent, I feel this tells people that it is in very bad or heavily worn condition. I like AU because it tells people that it is basically uncirculated but there may be a fingerprint or just the smallest amount of wear but there is significant original coin luster. An XF coin should have very little if any luster except in protected areas of the coin and there should be noticeable wear.
I know very little about grading world coins, so if there is a resource out there, I'd love the advice. You guys have been great and I appreciate the feedback you have already given.
I don't like the AU grade because of it's widespread misapplication to EF grade coins but I reckon we are stuck with it and have become familiar enough using it. For personal use I'm quite open to it but I don't want to legitimize it by including it in catalogs.
I do however see the merit in less than VG being included. Such grades are most useful for earlier coins where the normal minimum collectible grades can't really be applied. 300 year old coins are going to be showing their age so a G or AG might be perfectly OK whereas it would be discarded in a 100 year old example.
A simple single grade which has an appropriate French equivalent should suffice, how many people really know the differences between G, AG, Fair and Poor anyway?
UNC should be left alone. Strictly speaking FDC should be used for proofs and BU only for copper / bronze. I'm firmly in the European camp one this one and believe we should resist the temptation to Americanize the UNC grade because PCGS do it. I'd really hate to see 11 grades for UNC wouldn't you?
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

Some eurozone countries are still using FDC as an equivalent of BU. French catalogs are still considering FDC as UNC. This is quite a nice mess we have.

Considering all that, I'd be more than happy to leave the upper grades alone. Adding a single "Good" at the bottom that people can utilized for Poor/Fair/AG/and Good could give some benefit to collectors on here. Great discussion, thanks for the comments.
So how do we make it happen? Low grade revolution :)
