I have attached 2 photos of a coin I recently acquired (for 10 cents!) that I believe to be an 1838 Egyptian coin, composition "billon", which is copper/silver. It has a diameter of 21mm and is extremely thin, likely hammered. It has an accession date of AH1223 (1808) and a regnal year of 30 (1838). It is not in my copy of the Krause manual (1800 to 1994) and differs from the oldest shown in that my coin has a horseshoe-like arrangment on both sides and flowers around the edges on both sides (see pics).
I can't find this piece in my 19th Century Krause 5th Edition. Accession year of AH1223 would be Mahmud II who ruled until 1839 but I can't see any hammered coinage listed later than 1834, the coinage after that being milled. There also doesn't appear to be any token coinage listed for that era - it's a bit of a mystery! Have you got a weight for your piece?
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
Well done! I forgot that the toughra is not exclusive to Egyptian coins. My coin actually looks more like copper with a white sheen within, and if it was only .170 silver (the rest being copper) I guess that makes it "billon". Thanks a lot for your help!
