Fluke, where do you see the wear that brings it down from UNC? On the eagle's breast? The dealer has graded it FDC. I think there are too many nicks and bag marks to be considered a "perfect" coin, but I'm not sure I see any actual circulation wear.
Yeah, it looks pretty darn good to me. Probably not FDC (Fleur de coin, which in English is listed as brilliant uncirculated or gem) but certainly uncirculated

From looking at the reverse, which to me looks like there are plenty of marks which I would not call bag marks/scuffs. I did also add Unc in my reply just in case these marks are superficial.
I am by no means an expert, I am only an opinion with the information I have soaked up while collecting. It certainly isn't FDC though.

I would say it is uncirculated. World coins usually use the terms uncirculated or brilliant uncirculated for mint state coins. The latter usually indicates a virtually flawless coin. This coin has a few minor nicks, but I don't see any wear on it to indicate it was a circulated coin. So I go with uncirculated.
It's actually reasonably rare for the Vatican coins to be circulated, they usually use Italian currency and these coins are mostly made for tourist sets.
The lower value early coins may have circulated a bit more than the modern Vatican coins, but I doubt the highest valued gold coins would have circulated at all.

Hey, I hope I didn't sound like I was challenging your opinion. I am quite new at this and I am often probably too timid at assigning a UNC grade to a coin that didn't come out of a sealed box or mint set. I was sincerely curious to have my eyes drawn to the wear that you were seeing that would make it GEF instead of UNC. I still have a hard time distinguishing between circulation wear and bag marks.
