NGC Slabbing

Not sure if I have seen this posted, but here goes anyway.

Has anyone submitted coins for grading and then slabbed? I have looked through it and see the price per coin is extortionate in my opinion. $15 per coin with a max value of £300?

I am curious to see if any members have had the experience and if they think in their opinion it was worth the cost. I have a few that would be worth getting graded and slabbed for authenticity purposes, but not at that price.

You can get a much better deal by signing up for a membership which comes with a certain number of free submissions per year. Or find a local dealer who qualifies for bulk submission rates which are far more reasonable and have him submit the coins for you. Trying to arrange it yourself is the worst possible option, not only are you going to pay ridiculous fees but you will be required to pay for very expensive, secure shipping both ways. You could buy a whole lot of new coins for that kind of money.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

In the past I have used both PCGS and NGC. I remember when you could get a basic membership free, and there were no minimums or surcharges. IMO now with the high rates, fees to join, and per submission surcharges, it doesn't make sense to submit anything worth less than $200.
I did it once and it cost me about 25-30€ per coin. There will be more costs that you do not see in NGC Prizes.
I will have some coins graded soon again but I will not do it for coins that are not at least 500€ Catalogue value and at the same time in a grade that I would see as at least MS60

It was going to be €45 to have the Gold Coast ackey graded by PCGS as they have an office in France. I missed the last post to have it graded in France though as they do a week every now and then. It's now going to have a trip across the pond to be graded !
I think it comes down to what you personally want. I wouldn't bother with coins that are in my collection, because I don't really like slabs. But if you've got a decent value coin and you're going to sell it, it may be worthwhile because the slabbed coins can fetch higher prices than the unslabbed ones.

I'm only wanting this one grading to ensure its all good. With coins this expensive I think grading probably is worth it, incase I do sell it :)

Why not go for an insurance valuation as opposed to slabbing then? Or take it to one of the auction houses when they tour your city.

Edit: Lockdales are doing a valuation day in Durham on 27th April.
Its about them being world renowned and recognised. I despise slabs just like neil, but there are some that would be worth getting marked genuine but no one will believe it for sure if it isn't sealed and slabbed.

I was looking at the NGC membership fees but did not appear to see any free or discounted submissions unless I went up to the $150 membership which gives you $150 credit to submit. It wouldn't be worthwhile as I don't have that many coins worth submitting (as well as most I would hate so many of my coins sealed away from me forever...:snif:)

This reminds me of auction fees, seriously overpriced.

Have you thought of seeing if there are any Numista members near you that you could go in on a membership with? If you get 5 of you then that's only $30 each and then you get a couple of free coin gradings each.
You could also check with a trusted coin dealer and see if you could submit your coin along with theirs for a possible discount.
I have thought about sending to an affiliated seller, but for some reason I just can't trust them either.

Not sure if I would like the syndicate solution, but is a good idea. I don't mind paying for the membership, its the "How many times would I use it?" thing that bothers me.

I can pick you up next time I drive down to London for a coin auction if you like (I'm determined to pick up a cabinet lol), and you can invade DNW or somebody for a free appraisal!
Try ANACS for a better deal. They have just as much experience as either of the two bigger fish.

Sending coins to NGC or PCGS in Europe

Good Day,

I'm from Lithuania. Maybe you can help me.
I know that coins can be sent for grading through NGC or PCGS dealer, but in main time want to try ourself.

What is the procedure to certify coins in NGC and PCGS in Europe?

For Example:
1) On NGC site I need join into NGC Collectors society. As I understand it is 40$ worth.
2) What's my next steps? How much it will take? I need send coins to Munich(NGC)?

Whould be great if will write all steps with real price example.

P.S: Which grading service do you prefer: NGC or PCGS?

Sorry for my English.
Thank You!
Nobody knows :snif:
Hello,
I can comment only on NGC.
You can get in contact with their Munich office, they are quite helpful in offering support.
Yes you either have to be a member or you can send it to a approved coin dealer, although I doubt that there might be any in Lithuania.

There will be quite some forms to fill out but there are guides on the NGC website.

When I sent coins NGC only accepted sending it with special delivery companies with special insured hand to hand delivery.
That is also not so cheap.

Other than that I can only say that through the process you either get emails or see on their website how far they are with shipping, grading etc.
In total everytime it took quite long from start to finish I counted good 2-3 months until I got my coins back.

I would only slab a very valuable coin. Maybe, one worth at least several thousand dollars. Otherwise it is a waste of money.
never kill a mockingbird: it's bad luck.
