I know that this is Chinese, but I've never been able to authenticate it. I'm thinking perhaps it is some kind of token, rather than currency. Anyone else seen this?

Hmmm... such pics seem to be depicting an imitation struck coin without hole. Maybe some other people can confirm such diagnostic.

Imitation of Guangxu coinage, very strange though, never seen one like this before. Maybe used as a private advertising token?

Yes, this one is the original one. We can easily see the Chinese lettering counterfeit, added with the 2 dots above and under the missing hole.

​Yeah, seems to be similar, except for the hole.
Thank you one and all for all of your good information. With China making such exact duplicates, my guess is that it's probably some kind of "play" coin or token.
