I'm getting tempted towards this idea. Does anyone else collect on this particular theme?

I've always had a love affair with steam trains as I'm sure many of you do. If we can find enough room in our next house I'd love to have an extensive N gauge set up. Until that happens I reckon I could fill the gap by a nice themed coin album.

Does anyone know of a complete list of all such coins? The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the ones from North Korea and Brazil. I'm sure Liberia must have commemorated some railway related events. I guess the Brunel coin should be included as he built the Great Western.

I have some very old model steam trains/sets, but not coins. (Marklin)

Actual real steam model trains are cool. Should take it out and play with it really.

There are some railways you really need to travel on if you love rail. The Oslo to Bergen route is stunning, as is the Septemvri-Dobrinishte narrow gauge line through the Rhodope mountains.

Of course Liberia has a whole series of steam trains on coins, but I don't think these are the kind of coins you like:

I will see if I can find a list. I have a French medal engraved 1934 with a train
on the reverse and on the ribbon ...

Anybody ever take a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railroad ? It's on my bucket list, and as soon as I can convince my oldest son to join me, I'm on that mother from Moscow to Vladivostok !

Hey Phil wish you said something earlier. I gave away a add for South Pacific from the 1890's. I think I have one left for the Wisconsin. central . From the same time. But from a magazine. It is printed on both sides. But have a cross scission of a rail ,about a 1/4 thick And have a lot of clean spikes left. I was going to put in a box frame. But never got around to it, You need some more junk let me know.

My father is a steam train nut, he's got a large model railway and spends time chasing steam trains, recording the sounds they make with a microphone out the window. For his last birthday I managed to find some sets of old cereal trading cards from the 1970s that had trains on them. So I picked them up and framed them for him, he was over the moon. I hadn't thought about coins.

Hey Neil you guys have wooden Train whistles down there . You get a large one sounds like a train whistle.

Yes, My father has one of them. My Uncle was a train nut too and his boss bought an engineers cap and one of those whistles for him for his birthday one year, but unfortunately he was killed by a drunk driver on his way to work. His boss put on the cap and blew the whistle at his funeral. Our family has a bit of a tie with the railway, my grandfather was a fitter and turner for New Zealand rail.

That is a US 50 cent coin. I was going to frame so I could put up on wall

Thanks for all the suugestions and the research fellers, who knew there were so many? I would guess that the people who find old coins appealing are also drawn to relics from the Age of Steam. Same type of inner geek triggers.

Whatever the truth might be, it's undeniable that steam engines really lend themselves to the engraver's art.

US quarter state Utah is a very beautiful coin with this theme. Just got this coin today.
