Good evening all, or it is here in Germany. 1982 1 cent coin from USA are made with different components Zinc Lg and Sm date and Copper Lg and Sm date, (it's listed as Bronze). My question is how do you tell the difference between zinc and Copper/Bronze? they all look the same. I have seven of the coins and I would to take them out of their folder and put them in mine. But if I mix them up. How would I know the difference. Like always, thanks for your help.
I found several dozen full sets for sale locally and bougth them all. When you can see them side by side in a definitely identified set the diferences become quite clear. I've given most of them away since then but I managed to find one to photograph.
The copper coins have a nice high relief portrait unlike the nasty Zincolns and have a noticeably deeper red tone. I've been picking out all the copper cents for the last few years and I can tell the difference without looking at the date now.
The large / small date differences are pretty well explained here.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

Weight is the simplest way to distinguish them, but before I got a digital coin scale I would distinguish them by sound. Balance the coin in question on a fingertip and use another coin to strike the edge like a bell. Copper goes "ping" and zinc goes "tink". I.e., copper gives a nice sustaining bell-like ring, and the zinc is just a dull clink.

Thanks I have set almost like yours I can barely see the difference, wife can. But have some old ones also and can't tell the difference. Guess the weight test is the solution for me
