Help Identify this please - Phoenician Tetradrachma

6 berichten
I'm very new to ancient coins, so may not be doing it right. I got this coin the other day, and know it is from year 165 (Seleucid), or 148/147BC.

What I don't know is WHERE it's from; been reading a few articles on mintmarks and such, and it seems to be neither a tyrian Shekel or a sidonian mint. I've looked through wildwinds for the type, but it doesn't seem to be there.

Help please!

The inscription is in Greek and reads ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ = "(coin) of King Alexander".

Must be posthumous then? I thought the date here (left lower side of bird) read 166/5 (think it's 166), so 148/147BC.

These types are usually either from Tyre or Sidon as far as I know; trying to work out where this one is from as it doesn't have either of their mintmarks.
It's a silver tetradrachm (Berytos mint) - Kingdom of Syria, Alexander I Balas (150-145 B.C.). If your coin is genuine then you paid a lot or you made an excellent deal.

Thanks! The auction house I bought it from quoted it as 'possibly Berytos mint', but I'd read a bit about Berytos and from wiki etc it indicated it was just a village until Roman conquest in 140BC.

Must say I'm enjoying collecting ancients; you learn a lot from them. (though I only have 5 coins haha)

Can you tell me a bit about pre-roman Berytos? Just read up on Alexander Balas.
Here is a short timeline of the old village Biruta that will become lately Berytos or Berytus (romanized name). Hope this info will help you.
