Question about minor varieties with separated entries.

Sorry if its a dumb question, but I am not getting it.

Why there are two listings for this coin, e. g.:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2674.html
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces289.html

But for tons of other coins the varieties are listed in the same entry?

I am adding the 1903 coin to my collection and I'm struggling to realize where to put.

In 1903 the design was changed to use larger numbers for the dates. You can compare the shape of the zeroes on the coin images of the two page. For the "small date", the zero is more squared off at the top and bottom.

If your question is why did K&M choose to make this two separate types rather than something like 49.1 and 49.2, your guess is as good as mine.
