Holed coin values?

4 berichten

how do holes effect the values of these coins?

1. The US coin is valued at $45 on NGC in this condition, but what about now? I really don't know what to expect out of this coin?

2. And the Canada coin is valued at $9, I know it must only be worth bullion?

3. And the 1816 coin? I'll just be keeping this one.

And the final British coin is only worth BV anyway, so that's easy.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Here is one in bad condition that sold for $15, and I found another that sold for $22, but not as good as mine.

So tragic.

In my tiny amount of experience they're not worth much more than melt, unless it's otherwise such a spectacularly good coin that someone is willing to overlook the hole.

I did see someone in a local ad here selling a bracelet, each coin had four holes in it like that 5 cent piece, they looked up the book value for each coin and valued it that way, plus the work of destroying them all to make jewelry. :D I can't imagine they got their asking....

I'm interested to hear from someone with more experience than me though. I've never actually had to value or sell one with holes in it, I've just observed from afar. Though also in my experience you can find a buyer for almost anything if you have the patience.
How much is a holed coin worth? Mmmhh ... Not easy to answer. I don't know of any guidelines and I suppose there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration.

In my book, if a coin is holed neatly and at a place that doesn't affect the design too much, then I would normally be willing to pay at most half of the price for the same coin in the same grade without a hole. My profile pic is of a Brock token which I got for about CDN $25. Without the hole, I would be willing to pay about $70-80 for the same.

Now here is a token with an ugly hole, apparently made with a nail (which were square at the time):

In this case, the hole is part of the story since the countermark DEVINS & BOLTON was punched after the hole had been made. Without the countermark, that token, common as it is, would be worth $2-3 at most and would not interest me at all.

Coins that are reasonably common and holed clumsily in the center or on features such as a head or a crown are probably not worth much more than bullion value.
