The really interesting bit -

The most interesting regiment to take part in the Spanish American War was undoubtedly the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, better known as The Rough Riders, a unit made up from skilled horsemen raised by future President of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt.

If the item could be definitely tied to one of the roughly 1,000 survivors it would be priceless. While I haven't been able to find any proof (hence the $50 price) I believe it's very possible. I got the pin from an estate sale jewelry lot in Tampa bay, which was where the Rough Riders formed prior to departing for Cuba on the SS Yucatan. After their victories at Culp's Hill and Santiago they returned and as many were unable to go back to their former lives as ranchers etc. that where they chose to stay. I did find references in our local press archives to regimental reunions being held in Tampa so the regiment's connection to Tampa Bay is undeniable.

Also there's some engraving on the back which probably refers to the manufacturer, "Whitehead Morgan" although it's possible that they were engraved with the individual names of the recipients. The other half of the text is hard to read but it definitely begins with a "1" complete with quotation marks.

That's as far as I got before moving on to other things. I consider it to be no more than an interesting possibility with which you may have better luck.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.
