Help from French speakers [opgelost]

Greetings!
I'd like to ask the difference between "Mon nom est" and "Je m'apelle."

Which one should I use for more formal?
Which for normal greetings?
Which is more commonly used?

Thank you. I have heard both but I cannot clarify.

Je m'appelle is definitely more common/informal.
Now that I think of it, none of my francophone relatives or friends have really ever said 'mon nom est'.

It's probably a regionalism or something like that, here's an interesting article I found: http://66.46.185.79/bdl/gabarit_bdl.asp?id=3584
Thanks a lot!
Hello,

Even less formal than "je m'appelle whomok, et vous?"is : "moi c'est whomok, et toi?". This said,it might be bit familiar for some people...
