Over the past few years I've been putting together a collection of all the circulating coins minted in 1976, relying on Ebay, local Southern California coin shows, and the occasional dealer to fill in my collection. After years of steady searching I either have every coin I want, or have at least seen examples of them that I let get away. However, I have never, in all my searching, seen a single coin from 1976 from Madagascar.
According to Numista and the Krause guide, Madagascar minted a full set of coins from one to twenty Francs that year with mintages of at least a million for each denomination. The price guide values for each denomination are all unremarkable. I've seen Malagasy coins from later and earlier years for sale... Everything makes me thing I should have at least stumbled across a couple by now, but I've never seen any.
Does anyone know of any reason for coins from Madagascar for that year being so rare?
