I recently won an auction lot of French West Africa coins and was entering them in my collection when I found I already had the 1956 5 Francs coin. I always compare the new coin with the existing one to see which is in better condition. I immediately noticed that my existing coin looked different (a much lighter color) than the new coin or the other denominations in the same series. Upon removal from the 2x2 flip I was able to tell it was a much lighter in weight (genuine 3.1g, counterfeit 2.1g) and appears to be cast. The details of the coin are very crude when closely observed. From the flip used I would have cataloged this coin in the late 1990's when I may not have had the experience to notice some of the glaring clues it was a fake. Because of the time I would have acquired the coin, where it is from and the value I believe it to be a contemporary counterfeit with the circulation coinage. The counterfeit is on the left in the first two pictures.
