been putting some serious thought into selling my collection. I sort of don't want to but do at the same time. It feels like when I sold all of my Canadian colonials. But I’ve never regretted selling those once.
I’ll admit I’ve got no idea how much my collection is worth I know I have a few coins which are actually worth good money and I know what to do with those.
What should I do with the rest of those coins ? eBay ?
i rWallis’s how much of a huge task it would be but I need it for my family.
sorry about you selling collection. I would sort them in four ways. First, metal content-gold,silver or copper. Next, and which probably be should be first, is the rarity of the coin. Then, condition. And finally, supply and demand-what do other collectors value and want. Also, a good publication on your type of coins wholesale worth would be a key.
Neil sold his in one big lot for half it’s book value, that seems like a good idea, he saved enough time to make up for the amount.
Plus he didn’t have to deal with more than one person!
But he did have all the grades and values in an excel spreadsheet
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!
Yes, it's a little sad that our British Colonial specialist is thinking of selling.
Depending on what you have, Mark, and given that we have very similar interests, I would certainly be willing to pay about catalogue value for your Canadian colonials that I don't already have. Is your collection as listed in Numista pretty accurate and up-to-date? I could browse and let you know what interests me, but I am aware, of course, that you may prefer to sell in much larger lots to save yourself much work. I can't believe how many coins you have -- wow!
I also DM'ed you, Mark, about the Canadian 2017 set you were looking for.
Yes, it is sad to see him sell. Just like Neil...
Neil had a good reason, spend more time with his kids before they grow up!
And hey, if he neeeds the money, I’m sure Mark has a good reason too.

it’s all for my boy. Since his birth and illness I’ts really opened my eyes that material possessions are nothing. Memories are so much better.
the only coins I can currently see myself keeping are the Gibraltar coins and tokens, My British trade dollars and South Shields Conder tokens. So I won’t be completely closing the door on collecting just freeing up my finances :)
I say ebay. If I would sell every 10 penniä coin I have (340) on ebay, I would get atleast 1€ for every coin but if I would sell them to a local collector I probably would get only about 15€
Never give anything for a smaller price what you have used.
I guess it all depends on how much you want for them and how much time you want to take to sell them.
Like Redsmith said, I managed to sell mine to a single collector for half catalogue value, which was fine by me because I've actually spent very little money on compiling the collection. Most of it was stuff I'd taken from bulk lots that I'd managed to get my money back on by splitting and re-selling. I could have got more by splitting and re-selling my collection individually, but then I'd have all the listing fees and I'd have to take the time to photograph and list 700 coins.
So your options are:
Put your collection up as a whole, perhaps to an auction house if it's worth a few thousand, take a bit of a hit on the value, but get it all done at once (a bit like ripping off the sticking plaster quickly)
List the coins individually, it'll take a bit longer and take a bit more work but you'll get a better price for the coins.
A third option that is halfway in between that I used to do when splitting up bulk lots is to split them into countries and sell the coins from individual countries as a bulk lot. I found you usually get a decent price doing this because collectors of an individual country often aren't as keen to buy a bulk lot from numerous countries that they don't collect to get a few coins they want because they probably don't know what the rest are worth. But they are usually are keen to buy a big lot of coins from the country they collect to get a few that they want, because they will know the value of the rest of the coins in the lot. This option is less work than selling the coins individually but will get you more money than selling them all as a bulk lot.

Even if I'm not able to purchase your coins, especially your beautiful Straits Dollars, I wish you and your son the best.
