Import/Customs duty and VAT

I am not sure if the Forum is the right place to ask this question but I am a bit confused.
I wish to buy a coin from the USA via Ebay - the asking price is $50.95 with $16.95 postage. I understand that there may be additional costs in the shape of VAT and other duties on import to the UK, together with a £8 Royal Mail Fee. I have not done this before and any help would be appreciated.

From reading that, you'll pay VAT on the item and postage and then the £8 customs charge.
