Hi. I have recently acquired a hammered Denár, can't get a date off it and have matched the reverse to this coin by using the search term "ungari patrona":
However, the obverse is stumping me due to the shape of the coat of arms as it seems to be more in-keeping with later Hungarian coins. Can anyone help me with it?
As far as I can tell from the reverse picture it isn't II. Ulászló, II. Ulászló's denar should have a Polish Jagellon eagle in the inner circle while this one seems to have Austrian bonds so I'd say it's Rudolf (1576-1608) or maybe I. Ferdinánd.
The way to identify Hungarian denars is usually by the reverse as it contains the ruler's name and the center shield indicates which dynasty he belongs to so a better reverse picture would help a lot, size and weight usually vary from coin to coin.
I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.
Citeer: "PetrusAscanus"I can read 'ROmanorum Imperator Semper AUgustus GErmaniae Hungariae Bohemiae'
So it is a ruler of the Habsburg dynasty (german imperial rulers)
The centershield on the arms looks like Vienna mint
