History
Although the islands were already known to some Europeans in the 14th century, The Azores were discovered by Portuguese explorers in 1427. Settlement from Portugal started in 1435 and gradually expanded to the nine islands. The inhabitants focused mainly on agriculture.
Because of the strategic location of The Azores, almost halfway between Newfoundland and Portugal, the archipelago became an airbase for the Allies during the Second World War. Portugal was neutral at the time but honoured an alliance with Britain that had existed since the 14th century. The Azorean airbase helped the Allies to protect Transatlantic shipments from German submarines.
Two years after the Carnation Revolution that ended the Portuguese Estado Novo in 1974 The Azores became an autonomous region with its own government.
Currency
During the Napoleonic Wars The Azores were cut off from mainland Portugal. This situation led to Madeira and The Azores having its own version of the Real: the Real Insulano. The Real Insulano traded at a 25% discount to the Portuguese version and was used on The Azores until 1931, after which it was replaced by the Portuguese Escudo. The Azores have been using the Euro since 2002.
Coins
The first Azorean coins date from 1750 and are inscribed with 'Pecunia Insulana', meaning 'money of the islands'. In the late 18th century a series of coins was struck for The Azores with denominations up to 300 Reis. Their silver content reveals that at that time the Insular Real was worth 20% less than the Portuguese Real.
More low denomination coins were minted in the 19th century and the latest series in 1901, after which minting ceased. However, Azorean money was used until 1931.
