An amazing find!

Hi All,

Recently I was lucky to acquire a lot of Israeli coins & medals. I was unsure of what exactly I was going to receive when I bid for it but I figured I would take the risk since some of the items looked pretty interesting. It was hard to identify the exact contents of the lot as the images the seller took were pretty bad and taken from a distance. Either way I decided to bid on the lot and was happy to win it way under what I was willing to spend.

Lot arrived yesterday and I finally had a chance to go thru it and explore...

I was pleasantly surprised with the contents. There are many great coins and medals in this lot. One of these great medals are in my mind such an amazing find that I figured I'd share it with the community.

As many of you know I am an Israel/Palestine coin enthusiast and am very proud of my collection and variety that I am fortunate to own. So you can understand my excitement when I found this.

Below are images of a State Medal of Israel that was part of this lot.

I have seen the reverse of this medal (united Jerusalem scene) many times and actually own another medal with the exact design in a larger diameter size (see image below). So at first I thought this was the same design. However I was surprised when I flipped it over and saw a total different design from the medal I own. As you can see from above images it states

"
With Compliments

Y. Rabin
Prime Minister
Of Israel
"

This really peaked my interest so I did some research and came up with the following.

The Israel Mint produced these medals for Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel to give to other heads of states or other dignitaries. This medal was actually given to someone by the late prime minister of Israel! To me this was just.... WOW!

According to the Israel Mint site (link to exact medal) only 108 were minted in the bronze version with another 142 in the silver version.

My version was in a key-ring setting so I was initially sad that someone tampered with it. However upon reading the description on the Israel mint site I was happy to learn the following:

"The Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation had issued special medals for the Prime Ministers Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin and Menachem Begin. The medals were minted in limited quantities and intended to be awarded to Heads of State and other people of high distinction among the nations as a gift from the Prime Minister of Israel. Most of the medals were issued in the form of a key inside a ring - an opening at the top for a chain. Some were issued as regular medals."

I found further information online with images of what these key-rings look like and they are just as mine. Online values for this medal range from $250-400. Being that this was actually something that Y. Rabin held in his hands there is no way I would sell it anyways so the value is not too important.

Other similar medal I own

Anyhow.... I am just very excited with my find and had to share it with others...

Nice find! Congratulations. :)
I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.
Finds like that are very rare indeed. The previous owner would be pleased it landed in someones hands, such as yourself, who really appreciates it for what it is.
I wonder if the medals were documented , or numbered, as to who received them.
Nice piece of history.
Congrats!!!

I really hope so.... So curious who it was...
I also looked online to see if there was a record of some sort but did not find anything.

Thats an awesome find!
That really was a lucky lot, and it couldn't have made it into better hands. Let us know if you do find anything else out!

Thanks,

best place to find good things in Israel is the Shuk HaPishpashim in old city Jaffa near Tel Aviv. I've gotten many mandate coins there along with some other finds. I was there a few weeks ago and actually bought 2 Morgan dollars in XF at spot price.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was there a week ago and found a really good seller there and got a few good things, however there were too many sellers there who either over priced their items (I did haggle with them) or tried to sell me fake coins.

Do you happen to have any other suggestions of markets or dealers to visit while I’m here? Also do you know of any ancient coin dealers I can visit? Thanks

Yes, some of them are overpriced.... Especially for tourists and if you don't speak a fluent Hebrew. Wasn't an issue with me as I haggled them to death.

Funny story at the Shuk HaPishpashim. This one guy found out I was shopping for coins so he taps me on the shoulders and told me I should follow him as he has something he wants to show me. He takes me into this tiny shop full of crap all over and proudly takes this coin out of a case on his shelf and asks me if i want to buy a coin from Alexander the Great. Of course I said yes and was so happy to see it. So he hands me this "coin" and after taking a quick look I handed it back and told him its fake. He said "what are u talking about? You obviously dont know anything about coins.... blah blah blah....". As i was walking out of the shop he asked me why I think its fake.... so i said
" First of all its very shiny, second its says in the English Alphabet "ALEXANDER THE GREAT",......" I could not stop laughing....

About some other suggestions this is what I have for you:
1. Jerusalem old city Muslim Quarter Shuk. BE CAREFUL AS MOST COINS ARE FAKES. However there are some shops there if you look carefully that have genuine stuff and with haggling you can get a good deal.

2. Ben Yehuda / Jaffa Street Area in West Jerusalem has a few shops. On friday there is an open flea market there as well with some coins and stuff.

3. In tel Aviv there are a few reputable dealers. But be prepared to pay full retail.

4. Dont forget to visit the ICMC (Formally IGCMC) The Israel Coin & Medals Corp. Its in MAmilla MAll in Jerusalem near the Old City

5. Thursdays the Bedouin make a Flea Market near Be'er Sheba in the morning. First its only Livestock but after that its other goods as well. I know a few ppl that have found nice stuff there. I myself never did this venue though....

Hope this helps,
Aaron

Forgot to mention that there are also 1 or 2 places in Eilat. Mostly modern stuff but This one place (was not in the tourist area, i dont remember exact location) had a few Mandate Coins for sale.

Also, if you wont be in Jerusalem the ICMC has a location in Tel Aviv and Be'er Sheba as well. Again they have just modern stuff but its still cool.

If you do the Beer Sheba Branch you can also visit the Air Force Museum and do the Bedouin Flea market on a Thursday.

Also, There was an antique store in Tzefat that had some coins and banknotes as well.

Old market in Nazeret is also an option.

Each week (dont know about winter) in Netanya there is an antiques and collectibles flea market as well.

Enjoy the Trip!

Thanks for the suggestions and that is a funny story. I’ll try and check them all out. I was just in Be’er Sheva and visited the ICMC shop there.
