Even though the moderators are sleeping and the referees have more than biased views on this issue. I am warning the users of Numista to restrain from putting values into the catalogue.
Reason:
Numista-Account gets hacked. Thief has all the data plus address where to pick up or send his robber-friends if you have swapped once. He could even sell the informations. Who knows.
Happened already once here on Numista in France where a thief left a note at the house thanking the user for his stupidness. This issue was kept away from public.
Values are ony visible by you and its each numista users choice to show his collection in users setting to everyone or not.
But I agree, always good to be carefull with such things
If you like coins, medals and tokens with ship motives follow my new instagram account with regular updates @numisnautiker
From time to time I sell some coins on Ebay make sure to follow me @apuking on Ebay.
I mostly add cheaper coins to my Numista holdings, and no gold coins at all (although you can see one my profile pic). Also, no swapping.
Note: All gold coins and most of the more valuable coins are kept in 5 safe deposit boxes in 4 different banks, in 3 different "cities" (if you consider towns of 700 to 2000 to be cities).
It's quite true, I remember it too. One of our French members had his entire collection stolen and the thief left a note to the effect of "Thanks Numista". Really a shame as he seems a real class act, very gentlemanly.
It certainly gave me pause for thought about the safety of my own collection.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

God, how much your collections are worth for thieves to go through all the hassle? If it's too valuable, clearly you have it insured and aren't keeping it in your cupboard.

You might think that... but the reality is very different.

Sad that even some of the administrators of numista dont know about this case.
I mentioned it already, that shocking case was kept below low radar levels in fear of driving the users away from here. Maybe it is also against the infamousnumistarules to make other users aware of theft. We all know how thiefs get screened here.
@phfoticus:
That should be save. An advantage is also that in such small towns they know your face and no stranger can just walk into the vault.
So in 2018 you've decided out of the blue to warn people of a single-incident crime spree that you think took place in 2015, but have no evidence of it ever happening because there's a Numista conspiracy to cover up a single incident that, if it did happen, occurred 2-3 years ago?
Of course I feel that we should all be careful about this stuff but without proof it just seems like you're throwing around accusations to discredit the site and its administrators.
I believe you were not with us at that time, but as Phil said... I do remember part of this event as it was a dark time in Numista when a lot of Scam happened, young little kids, A french guy working for McDonalds if I recall right, etc. etc. even our good friend in India with Two houses was around that time.
The information was quickly handled by the administration...
I think numista members just need to add extra precaution and be very focused when entering their private messages, and verifying they are not public.

We dont have to far... lets say your account is set to everyone view your collection! which some of us had at one point!
The values are out there in the web, not only here in Numista.. anyway a theft with knowledge will know that 100 Morgan dollars are enough reason to break a window...
A: That "add your value" was implemented only a few days ago, therefor a warning from my side to refrain from participating with this new feature.
B: Your "single-incident crime" as you call it is pretty serious, at least for me.
C: I checked if i can find that thread but it was not there, or at least i didnt find it. Its not an uncommon practise to let threads vanish because of "numista-laws" I am sure the french side knows more about it.

+1
Being careful with information online should be a given; and I'm giving Hamster the benefit of the doubt on whether the incident happened or not, but the whole coverup conspiracy that he's pushing just seems kind of... fishy.
Yes just like Phil said, it did happen. I believe he told everyone he was going out of town that weekend. So they know no one was home. Or on vacation. I do believe we all got together and helped him start over. I think it happen in France.

I completely agree with you.
Also i can recall that my investigation about that McDonalds Guy with his highmaintance girlfriend was handled quickly aka deleted eventhough he made like 5000? Euro damage to the numista-users.
@mona and casstaylor
Good that also other users remembered this case. We never got an explanation if the database was hacked or how the adress was leaked. Where are those threads and why also was Jarcek message edited secretly concerning this case?
My warning about the new feature is thus not pure invention.
Personally I think hamster has a point whether the theft is true or not,
I don't show my exact location or coins in my collection or anything too personal.
Always be careful of what you put online, even on Numista.
It has not put me off but helps to put me on guard.
Good luck and stay safe,
