In your second picture I think I can see a 'V' (or Roman numeral 5) surrounded by two four pointed stars on either side if you rotate clockwise 45 degrees; doesn't look like a VOC coin though.
In the first picture I think if you rotate counter-clockwise 45 degrees you can kinda see a crown on a shield:
That's the best I can do, I'm afraid. Perhaps a token or imitation?
Yep you're bang on there. I was thinking 18th century token but have trawled and trawled the Web, can't find a thing. It having a big v and two stars was hoping someone might recognise.
I'm going out on a limb here, but the coat of arms seems to have an inner part (no idea about the proper heraldic jargon) so maybe it's a Portuguese coin/token? This seems to be the closest one I can find, but I could be wrong and it could be an entirely different coin from some obscure little German state.
Timeframe wise I'd also agree with your guess of 18th century, perhaps anywhere from mid 16th to mid 19th.
Beat me to it (I think the one in link above is better) - just now found
this Portugal 5 Réis which has a large Roman V for 5 on one side ... https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces35306.html
but admittedly mine does not have the stars. Mainly I believe it is similar due to
the large shield on the other side which has D G lettering lower right like the mystery coin has.
