Half Angel? coin weight - help identify please

I *think* it's a half angel weight of Spanish origin based on the iconography and weight, and similar bits. But then I have no idea... I've been finding it difficult as most of them are so beaten up.

Ideally I'd like to know an era, and definite identification for it. Ideally even a value!

Weight: 2.54 Grams - leading me to believe it's pre 1619

Thanks!
Looks like a coin weight.

I'm not sure why you would go the 1/2 Angel / Spanish route? It says England to me. The standing figure is clearly St George standing astride the recently slain dragon which would narrow the choice to GB or Russia I reckon. As his chest plate shows the English flag I'd discount Russia.

You're right with the period though. From James 1st onwards merchant weights were required to carry the date.

There's not a lot of information on the subject but if you have the time and patience try searching the finds.org database and see if you can get a match.

For values, it's going to be tricky as they're often sold as sets but you might find this useful to get a ballpark figure -

Good luck, hope this helps some and please keep us posted if you find anything.

Thanks for the well thought out reply Phil - I think we're agreed on the general period and weight

Half Angel - Pre 1619, probably 1500-1600

A couple of reasons I don't think it's British. It's possible it was part of the antwerp batch (The circular dots around it might suggest that), but I think most of those were to a more 'British' specification

1. Usually you have George/the Angel slaying the dragon on those weights, (like on sovereigns)
2. There is usually a crown on them with the British types
3. It's too well struck. If you take a look, most of these 16th century tokens look like hell. This is quite well struck.
4. His 'dress' is Spanish. (Though good point about the St Georges Cross)

I don't have Withers, so unless somebody does I guess this is going to remain a mystery!
