Vietnam (Empire)? Malaysian Peninsula?

One of my local coin dealers has this coin for sale. He was told only that it came from Vietnam. I am interested in buying it, but he needs to know what coin it is before he can determine a fair price.

There are only markings on one side. The other side has some discoloration, but looks like it was always blank.
It is approx 3.5 cm and just under 9.32 grams.

Thanks!
It sounds like Malay Peninsula a lot of their coins are one sided like you described. I have a few of them that look very similar but I can't tell you exactly which one it would be.

Indeed, Malay Peninsula is a great possibility especially if the coin is tin.

There is also the possibility that it is an old East Asian currency token, but I don't think it's a coin from Vietnam (Empire); the characters are far too crude and not the sort normally found on them. The source saying it's from Vietnam might be confusing it with the Tonkin 1/600th Piastre, which is similar in appearance, although to be fair the coin could be an imitation token of it.
Thank you for your ideas.
I agree that the Malay Peninsula is a possible source, since some of their coins do have a comparatively curvy script. However, I did not see a match on Numista. Other than just using google, is there another source I can search?
How can I determine if the coin is tin?
Thanks!
Not Vietnam - Empire. They don't have these kinds of scripts. However, they do look like ancient Chinese characters, like this Wang Mang coin:

Though, I still could not identify the letter after some research.
