Ancient Roman sestertius (?) [opgelost]

5 berichten
I recently bought a lot of uncleaned large Roman coins. Most of them are completely covered in dirt and will take a lot of soaking to become identifyable but there were 3 coins in the lot that aren't so dirty. I think they're sestertiuses but I guess they could be some other large coins too. Here are their pictures, if someone can identify them please help. :)

No. 1) 28mm

No. 2) 27mm, very thick: 4mm

No. 3) 25mm

Also, one last question. Do you think I should try to clean those or should I just leave them as they are?

Thank you all for your help. :)

Hi,

First one is a follis of Maximianus, in my opinion. GENIO POPULI ROMANI on reverse, star in right field, Trier mint probably.

Second one is an provincial issue from Moesia, Viminacium, maybe under Philip the Arab, AN VII.

Third is also from Viminacium, see the previous link. Looks like a younger emperor, what can you read on the legend? I can't read anything on the pics.

You're right, I didn't even think of looking at follises since in my experience they're a lot smaller in diameter. Probably a different mint since as far as I can tell the mint mark has only 2 letters, can't see exactly what they are.

It's Trajan Decius, I can read C M Q TRAIANVS on the obverse and the reverse AN XII also fits. Your link helped a lot in identifying it, thank you! :)

In your opinion, should I soak these and try to get the rest of the dirt off or should I leave them as they are?

they probably could get cleaned and look better but I don't know how sorry.

I'll just use distilled water and/or olive oil, nothing too aggressive. :)
