One Yen from Meiji era? Real or Fake? Year not found [opgelost]

Hello, first of all i want to introduce myselft as a new user here in Numista (didn´t find a especific place for this).

My name is Ezequiel, i started muy coin collection the last year when my grandfather gave me his collection. After that i started my own collection. I found Numista web page a few months ago searching info about coins and after search a lot of coins here i decided to become a registered user to make questions and learn more about coins.

Also as a some kind of bonus i would like to said that i am historian and archaeologist so i have some kind of special interest in coins, and for instance, sorry if my english is poor sometimes :P

Enough presentation XD, now here i go with the coin.




Recently i bought this coin while in holidays in an outing that you have in your list.

As far as i have searched the catalogue in Numista, the coin wich is more similar is the 1 Yen large type from Meiji rule

Here are the pros and the cons that i find that lead me to distrust the possible authenticity of this coin.

Pros.
Diameter ok: 38.6 mm
Edge ok: reeded
Most of the desing from both faces of the coin matches

Cons.
Year not found (in my coin a kanji is missing to match somo of the years, most similar 1888)
Weight not good (24gr. instead of almost 27gr.)
Extreme good condition
The price i paid was, i guess it was low

​Changed the info about the diameter thanks to the user Idolenz. it´s 38.6mm so it would match the large type 1 Yen Meiji.

if the true weight of 24g is accurate, it is too bad, it is silver plated nickel or copper forgery.

If I see pictures of real ones, and compare the details with this coin, I am convinced it is a replica.
How muc did you pay? Where did you buy it?

I am more convinced that it is a replica thanks to your coments.

In summary, the weight is not ok (as said, 24gr instead of almost 27gr.), I use a scale to compare the weight of my coins with the information that you have here and i never found a weight that did not correspond untill this coin.

User PetrusAscanus´s finally found the year that i was missing. In the link he posted also i found another difference or rare detail that makes me distrust even more this coin; the 1st photo of the second line, probably you cant see it but the flowers and the tie/ribbon are touching because a metal impurity

As user Idolenz said too, coin seems to be rough. And finally user Mr. Midnight, you're probably right with the manufacturing material.


Petrus, i bought the coin recently in one of the outings listed here, specifically in the "Street market of Vandoma" in O Porto, Portugal (https://en.numista.com/outings/street-market-of-vandoma-porto-394.html). It cost me 5€, I thought it would not be so much lost if it was not real


So, after saying all this, I think we can give it for replica. I'll leave the post open in case you want to add any more comments; tonight I will give by resolved the post.

Yes, I agree, replica. Others have said it already, but the grainy texture gives it away.

It says meiji year 11 .

5€ is not much for a coin, for this replica it is expensive.
For my collection, I usually pay for these replicas/fakes/forgeries €1 to maximum €3....
