​This is a sales tax token issued by the Chamber of Commerce of Pike County, Illinois.

Although the State of Illinois passed a sales tax (labelled an "occupation tax", in order to be permitted under the state's constitution) in 1933, the state did not issue tokens to facilitate the collection of the tax until 1935. Therefore, a number of counties, businesses, Chambers of Commerce, Lion's Clubs and other groups issued their own tokens for this purpose. These tokens were in general use until the State tokens were issued in 1935; those were basically used for about a year 1935-36. They were all effectively demonetized in 1947.

Pike County is one of the more common of the private tokens; it is worth about $2-$3.

​Louisiana's first sales tax went into effect in October 1936, using the "Luxury Tax" tokens (like yours). The laws were overhauled in 1938, the "Luxury Tax" tokens were withdrawn, and redemption ended at the end of 1938.

The "Public Welfare Tax" tokens were issued 1938-1940; they were withdrawn in 1940, and redemption ended in March 1941.
