Valuation of Morocco 1/2 Dirham AH1286

7 berichten
Trying to find a value for the Morocco 1/2 Dirham AH1286. This item is identified in the Krause WCC as C175.1, is without valuation and described as 'rare'.

The Coin illustrated below appears to be an example of the above item. It may be described as follows:

Weight - 1.33 grams

Shape - slightly oval - 17 mm x 18 mm

Struck at the Fas (Fez) mint.

There is evidence of the item being struck on an undertype (previously struck coin). Parts of the devices are weak, missing or off the flan.

All comments welcome.

Here from NGC are the prices for this type of coin by condition.

Personally I would grade your coin approximately VF, considering that the edges are always flattened on this type. An expert familiar with this type of coin might grade it differently, perhaps a bit higher.

NGC doesn't price the 1286, as you mention only saying "rare"
Clearly this indicates it is more valuable than the other years listed.

As a first guess, since the other years range from $40-200 in VF, I might estimate the book value for this one something around $300, but this could be off in either direction. And of course actual sales often occur below book value.

I guess for a better idea of value you will have to hunt around for one being sold at auction.
Many thanks Seeker55 for your response and analysis. I will keep an eye out for an auction appearance.

Two years ago, I made an inquiry on the British Coin Forum site. A numismatist in Spain responded. Please see the following link:

Although he indicated a small value, I have not been able to find any examples of the coin for sale or auction in the past two years. It appears that my picture is the single example to appear on-line. Still, I hope an example other than mine will emerge.

Thanks again and best regards,

Here is one that sold at auction in 2017. The price realized for the lot of coins was £50.

Thank you Numisquare for the information. I followed the link to the Baldwin auction in April 2017, lot # 421. There is a Craig # 175.1 - 1/2 Dirham pictured there as part of a lot of 5 pictured coins and 16 additional coins without images. It is described as a 1/2 Dirham of AH 1284.

I also examined the digital image of the 1/2 Dirham illustrated, in magnified form. The image appears to my eye to be correct as described...an AH 1284. It is useful information but, is a different date. I am after the AH 1286.

Thanks again for taking the time and making an effort to assist in my quest. It is much appreciated.

Definitely a date error on my part. I tried searching for the 1286 date and could not find any sales. The Corpus des Monnaies 'Alawites (1984) lists this coin as being in only one collection: THAU, (Jean-Louis). Fès (Maroc).
Thank you numisquare for your follow-up to my post. It is interesting to see that it appears only in the THAU collection . This seems to verify that the coin is rare as indicated in Krause's WCC and therefore not expected to come up for auction frequently. I feel fortunate to have acquired the item for my collection.

Thanks again to both Seeker55 and numisquare for their generous help in this matter.
