NETHERLANDS - UNITED STATES (1581-1795)
The United Provinces is the name taken by the seven provinces of the predominantly Calvinist north of the Seventeen Spanish Provinces or Netherlands from 1579 to 1795. These provinces concluded on January 23, 1579 the Union of Utrecht, dedicating their secession over to the Spanish crown. It is only on July 26, 1581, by the Act of The Hague, that they really constitute themselves in State. Spain recognizes the independence of the United Provinces by the Treaty of Münster (May 1648).
In 1795, the creation of the Batavian Republic marks the end of the United Provinces.
