1885 NICARAGUA COMPANIA AGUADORA DE LEON 1 1/2 CENTAVOS TOKEN

This is the info I can find searching the web but have not been able to find it here so I can include it in "My Coins",
any suggestions on how to find it.

Thanks,
Samuel

A very interesting item. Google tells me nothing - where do you find the year 1885?

I think it is not in the Nuimista catalog.
You can add it to the catalog yourself

Very nice photos, I have cropped them for you.

This is the image i found online. I read that at the time this coin was made there was a shortage of currency so the government allowed this city to mint it own currency.

Nice. An interesting little corner of history.
Did you see this thread about 'alternative currency'?
your Nicaragua piece is certainly one of that type.

I found this information, is not much but i hope help you.

First of all, this "coin" is actually a TOKEN, reason that not appear in the standard catalogue of the world.

The clearest information is : "1885 Nicaragua Compania Aguadora de Leon 1 1/2 Centavos Token NGC MS63 RB Leo-9 " that notifies the item is a token.

Wow thanks for all the help, this is really a great forum!

Mr. Midnight that for the link I believe I found what type of coin this is:

Company Tokens - These tokens were used by various companies who operated in remote areas and it wasn't practical to have a large quantity of cash on hand. The company would mint their own tokens and use these to pay their workers. The workers could use the tokens to pay for goods at the company commissary or a local general store. At specific times during the year, or when they finished their employment, the workers could trade their tokens in for regular currency. Examples of these are the Suez Canal tokens and sugar plantation tokens mentioned by Apuking, but there are other examples such as lumber mills.

Once again thank you all,
Samuel
