I agree with Derf. Maybe vf. It is a nice coin. You would be lucky at 20 usd.

Hi

I am always trying to learn, could you please elaborate on why you think it's VF?

To me this would be an XF+. I can barely see any wear on the eagle's high points (chest and knees) and only tiny amounts of wear on the forehead and eyebrow of the Baron. But may also just be the harsh light. Only thing dropping the grade from aUNC is the bag marks for me.

many thanks!
I'm going to sit firmly on the fence, it is easily an XF 40 at first glance. VF 30 and lower it is not, AU 50 it is not.
What is the difference between VF 35 and XF 45? In this case just opinions derived from the information at hand, i.e the two images supplied in the post. For me to give an honest opinion, I would have to hold the coin myself, this is why I've gone for the inbetween starting point of XF 40, but if a professional grader was to grade this coin I could see the grade anywhere from VF 35 to XF 45, more likely 'XF Details'. But this is just my opinion.

I see wear on the eagle's chest, because the points on the hair have lost their sharpness, but the points are still very visible, the details above the eagle's eye are not visible. I see wear on Hindenburg's ear and hair and moustache, but again these details are still clearly visible, this is why it is not VF 30 or lower. These coins were very robustly made, with strong differences between the details and it takes a lot of wear to remove the detail, I have seen many an ebayer trying to pass off a much more heavily worn coin of this type for the grades we are now talking about.

I see no signs of remaining luster in the photos, and the rim is heavily damaged, the scratch marks are also heavily distributed across the coin, this is why it is not AU 50 or higher. I don't think I have ever seen this coin without marks on it like this, so don't think this is a really big negative point. These coins aren't treated with much care, hence all the ding marks here and there.

As for value, Mint mark E, so not as common as an A, but not super rare, as there are many of these coins on the market. These coins do a lot of trading in Germany and are still collected, however there isn't much difference in value from VF 35 to XF 45, maybe a few Euros.

This coin could easily be sold on EBay for €10-€15, and a Dealer, with a bit of Marketing, could get €20-€25 for it. You could get €6 for the silver alone, but don't do that, as it is a nice example of a coin that has a lot of historical interest. So the real value of it isn't what people will pay for it, but rather how it came in to your procession, and the story of how it got there.
