Ancient Coin (Indian?) Needing ID

4 berichten • 101 keer bekeken
Roughly rounded coin with unusual markings on both sides and possible markings along the edge. Metal appears to be silver. Roughly 19mm in diameter and 3-4mm thick (uneven).
I regret that I can't give much information as to the provenance of this coin...it seems to have belonged to my great aunt and was left in our safe with the rest of her small (unrelated) collection, but I've no idea how she came by it.
(Edit) Weight: 10.9g

There are very few readable details on the coin but from sword like mint mark seen in the second image, the coin can be attributed to Indian Princely State of Hyderabad, Aurangabad mint.

Yes, I agree, I think it matches

(accounting for differing striking positions on the flan).

I believe this is a rupee, so it should weigh from 10.8 to 11.6 grams. Your coin shows a partial date of (2 or 3) followed by 3, but these coins (KM#45) were only made from AH 1227 to 1244, and it matches the example on Zeno, so it's AH 1233. It has a large number of schroff (test) marks that shopkeepers made to be sure it was solid silver. This actually is a plus for authenticity.
Thank you ever so much Parimal and Seeker55. I weighed the coin today on our jeweler's scale and it comes to 10.9g which is within the range you gave Seeker55. How curious, I wish I knew the story behind how it ended up in our family.
