They really don't interest me. I'm at 134 now.
Surely. What is ancient to you? Anyway German states are you friend.

I confirm that it is possible to have >200 countries and >300 issuers when limiting oneself to circulating coins of 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

I just hit 160 and I don't think I have any ancients, maybe as far back as 1500's but not many ;)
Just try to fill out that world map and go from there.

the closer we get, the harder it is to move forward

yes, i am up to 205 now and the oldest coin i have is 1623.

I have a few German states which helps..
Hello everyone, I can confirm that it is possible to exceed the 200 countries without any coin of the considered "Ancient and early medieval polities" in the catalog of Numista. I have 243 countries and 382 issuers without any coin from those ancient countries.

I am at 260 with only 3 of them being ancient. It could be possible to get to about 270 without ancients if you don't mind the micronations and the 'limited recognition' countries.
If I am not mistaken, the "Numista countries" are divided into such groups:

Countries and territories: 257
Ancient and early medieval polities: 32
Modern states with limited recognition: 7
Micronations: 4

From the countries and territories, these may be considered as "ancient":

1. Bohemia
2. Byzantine States
3. Central American Republic
4. Crimea, Khanate of
5. Crusader States
6. Mongol States
7. Moldavia and Wallachia
8. Low Countries Feudal
9. Livonia
10. Kievan Rus
11. Isles de France and Bonaparte
12. Islamic States
13. Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
14. Rus Principalities
15. Saint Barthelemy
16. Sint Maarten
17. Tashir-Dzoraget
18. Windward Islands

So, it leaves you with 257-18 = 239.

Plus or minus a few more that I did not notice. But you can definitely reach 200 "Numista countries" without going into "ancients". Plus Modern states with limited recognition & Micronations, if you want to go even to 250.

Good luck!

P.S. And I went into ancients, and my next milestone is 275 as of right now.
That's a very bizarre definition of ancient. I wouldn't even consider some of the places you listed as medieval, certainly not ancient.

I would agree with you, but you would be surprised how many people will use the word "ancient" to coins even from the 1800s. My point was to illustrate that even if to count those "countries" as "ancient", you can easily go well beyond 200.

4. Crimea, Khanate
6. Mongol States
9. Livonia
12. Islamic States
13. Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
14. Rus Principalitie
At least these countries can be quite easily and cheap received from swaps.... Why not to add them to the collection? They are much more interesting then modern countries)

I would disagree with you. Because I can count on 1 hand people who are willing to swap coins from these countries: Crimean Khanate & Rus Prinicipalities.

Meaning that they are rare and not accessible to a wide public. Plus, you need to have nice coins so that those people would swap with you. And most beginner collectors won't have such coins to offer, including myself:). Plus they are much harder to read, research than average modern circulation coins, and that is why people do not look into them in the beginning.
Thx for the replies! I'll shoot for 200 and see where I stand then.

For the record, I'm limiting myself to coins with a 4-digit Gregorian date.
what is "Countries"
The Numista list of only Countries AND territories with undeveloped sections and subsections included on March 1, 1650 lines to which we can add later Tokens, Exonumia, Ancient and early medieval polities (with sections), and Micronations
BOINC
I have got just 144 countries and 218 issuers even while collecting ancients B)
I guess I would have to collect more moderns to enter those prestigious country clubs.

Dear iiruig and Immy:

I set my goal to have 250 countries with this exact definition. I am getting very close, almost without any coins below 1900s and not going bankrupt, or searching for impossible to find or too expensive coins.

I think the 250 countries club is a great benchmark, much more feasible than the 300.

I would move all those 18 countries you listed to ancients too.

So then you get exactly 239 recent/modern countries + 4 micronations + 7 states limited rec. = 250!

You included NCLT-only countries, right? For example, Benin, which has issued no coins for circulation.
Can you tell how many of that 250 did issue circulating coins after 1900?

About 180 countries.
