(CSIP) Co-operative site improvement project - map + related issuers links

Hi all!

Here is a new small CSIP project to improve Numista through collaboration with two goals with basic image illustration below:
  • Updating the map within Dashboard i.e. linking issuers with areas to be highlighted on the map when hovering. When over Italy area on the map, you may have the following with popup showing coins from Italy and Rome (ancient).

  • Updating the "See also" links shown for each issuer. Example when on Canada page, two links are shown.

How this works
  • Below is the list of issuers not updated (to start from fresh all issuers); then you may post a message with the name of the issuer and info about the area or the areas to be highlighted and/or other issuers listed on Numista that should be linked.
  • For area, you may post names of current countries you think should be included within the area for the issuer. For instance, Rome ancient is not a current country on a map but Italy is.
  • For "See also" links, you may post names of other issuers listed on Numista that you consider are related. For instance, United States would be related with United States - Pre-Federal but not with Tanzania.
  • When an issuer is updated for both area and links, its name is removed; when an issuer is updated for one part only, the missing part is indicated in the list after its name.
  • When a new issuer is created on Numista, its name is added at the bottom of the list.

Basic illustration with Rome (ancient) gives:
  • Area to be highlighted on the map: Italy
  • "See also" links: Roman provinces, Byzantine Empire

Note: This thread is not about defining what is a country or the map accuracy itself, then please no post about what is or not an official country and no post asking to move a border a bit left or a bit right. :D

Same thread is available on the French part, right here; both lists will be simultaneously updated, meaning an issuer removed from the English list will also be removed from the French list and the other way around too.

  • Venezuela: the area is right again, and (practically) all of the provinces were also inside of Venezuela. So, in that area, Barinas, Caracas, Maracaibo, Margarita, and Táchira should be included in the map. The one exception goes to Guayana, which I am unsure about. If that place is the same as "Guayana Esequiba," It looks like that area is the left side of Guyana, but not in Venezuela. And for the "See also" links, it is the same comment as that for Argentina.

I was going to update on Argentina and Venezuela but you beat me.

As for your concern of Guayana Province, this was the southern province of venezuela, and has no relation with Guyana "Country". just similar name as are in the same area-region.

Citeer: "Sulfur"...Indian States as an example, when you click on the "See also" link, country:"Indian states and kingdoms" is typed into the search bar. When every state has been separated, instead of there just being something that says "No result has been found," maybe the page can just be full of links to all of the states that have been split? I am not sure if that would work, but it is an idea...
Will check what could be done for these special cases along with linking when numerous sub-sections like German states, Indian kingdoms, Italian states, etc.

I think this is a greater issue than border accuracy.

Concerning Sao Tome and Principe. The map currently shows Sao Tome and Principe when hovering over the tiny island to the west of Cameroon. This island is actually part of Equatorial Guinea known as Bioko (includes the capital Malabo). Sao Tome is west of Gabon and Principe is west of the mainland portion of Equatorial Guinea known as Rio Muni.

Mongolia, or Outer/North Mongolia, prior to gaining independence (with the help of Imperial Russia *cough*buffer state*cough*), used to be a Chinese province during the Qing dynasty rule (1644–1912). Could we update the map so that it shows China - Empire when you hover over Mongolia?

ps: China still has another province called Inner Mongolia.

It looks like São Tomé and Príncipe is in the right spot to me. I am not sure how large the picture will turn out, but here is a screenshot of the area on my map:

The larger dot west of Equatorial Guinea is São Tomé and Príncipe; the very small dot above it would be part of Equatorial Guinea. Now, technically São Tomé is a different island than Príncipe, but only one dot is used on the map, which has been placed around the area in-between both places.
  • Done: Pitcairn, Samoa, Tonga, and Tuvalu, American Samoa, Cook Islands, New Hebrides, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Portuguese Timor, Timor-Leste, and Tokelau, and Vanuatu, New Guinea, German New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, and Solomon Islands, Niue, French Oceania, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Indonesia, Irian Jaya, Riau, Netherlands East Indies, Australia, Philippines
Sulfur, I agree the large dot to the west of continental Equatorial Guinea is Sao Tome and Principe. The problem is that the tiny dot which you agree is part of Equatorial Guinea shows Sao Tome and Principe when hovering over it and does not show Equatorial Guinea. It takes some persistence to show the hovering over the tiny dot but it is definitely a different hovering than over the Sao Tome and Principe larger dot.

Oh, I see what you mean now! Rather than trying to get my mouse over that spot, I just added 1000 coins from São Tomé and Príncipe and, sure enough, that island was coloured a bright red. Good catch, because I (obviously) would not have noticed that.
  • British Antarctic Territories: an area needs to be created for this to be highlighted in.

I shall be working on North America, and I will start by giving the Dutch places their own post:

So, with the additional dots that should be added to the map that I talked about in an above post, would it also be possible to add Bonaire to the map as well? They do not have any coins catalogued on this site, but it would help with some Dutch territories. With that said, here are places that need changes on the map:
  • Aruba: needs no border changes.
  • Curaçao: needs no border changes.
  • BES Islands: it is currently highlighted under the area of the British Virgin Islands, but it should also be highlighted in the non-existant Bonaire. Bonaire is the B in BES, afterall. Also, the reason BES Islands are highlighted in British Virgin Islands is because of Saba and Saint Eustatius, but those two places are closer to Anguilla's/Montserrat's dot (they share the same dot), so BES Island's highlighted area should probably be moved over there.
  • Saint Eustatius: it is not on the map yet, but should be highlighed in Anguilla's/Montserrat's dot.
  • Sint Maarten: it is not on the map yet, but it should probably share a dot with Anguilla/Montserrat.
  • Netherlands Antilles: it is currently only highlighted under Aruba and Curaçao, but the fictitious Bonaire should also be added. And so should Saba and Saint Eustatius (so the area of the Anguilla/Montserrat).
  • Netherlands West Indies: it is not on the map yet, so it should be highlighted in the areas of Aruba, Curaçao, the non-existant Bonaire, and Anguilla/Montserrat (for Sint Maarten, Saba, and Saint Eustatius).

And here are changes for the "See also" links:
  • Aruba: it currently has none, but it should be connected to Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, and Netherlands West Indies.
  • Curaçao: it is only connected to Netherlands Antilles, but Netherlands and Netherlands West Indies should both be added.
  • BES Islands: it is connected to both Netherlands and Netherlands Antilles. Netherlands West Indies should be added, and so should Saint Eustatius (the E of BES).
  • Sint Maarten: it should be connected to Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, and Netherlands West Indies.
  • Netherlands Antilles: it is currently connected to Aruba, Curaçao, BES Islands, and Netherlands. Saint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, and Netherlands West Indies should also be added.
  • Netherlands West Indies: it currently has no "See also" links, but should probably be connected to Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, Saint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles, and BES Islands.
  • Saint Eustatius: it is connected to no place, so Netherlands, Netherlands West Indies, Netherlands Antilles, and BES Islands should all be added.

And on a side note: if it is spelt "Sint Maarten," then should Saint Eustatius also be spelled with a Sint?
The countries connected to Eastern Caribbean are the ones I am not so sure of, so I may need some help figuring these out.

So far, all of these places have "See also" links connected to Eastern Caribbean: Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Barbados, Saint Kitts and Nevis, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, Bermuda, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and Cayman Islands. Martinique should also have a "See also" link to connected to Eastern Caribbean.

For the Eastern Caribbean's "See also" links, they include every bolded country excluding Martinique (which should be added to East Caribbean's links). All of that I understand.

What is confusing me is about the non-bolded countries. The first curreny for the Eastern Caribbean is called "British West Indies dollar (1935-1965)," and it seems all of those non-bolded places may fall into that. And if that is the case, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago should also have "See also" links to Eastern Caribbean.

With that considered in regards to the map, Eastern Caribbean currently covers Anguilla/Montserrat/Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica/Martinique/Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, and Grenada. That means Eastern Caribbean should also be highlighted in British Virgin Island's area.

But what about those that are not bolded? Should Eastern Caribbean be highlighted over all of those? And should Eastern Caribbean have "See also" links to all of those non-bolded areas? Or will Eastern Caribbean be split, and so I do not have to worry about it?

-----

With the individual islands:
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis: it has no "See also" links, but the individual Nevis and individual Saint Kitts should be connected.
  • Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, and Turks and Caicos Islands should all have United Kingdom added to their "See also" links.
  • British Virgin Island should also be connected to Tortola in its "See also" links.
  • Martinique should have France added to its "See also" link.

All bolded/italicized places have correct borders, and aside from the bulletin points, all should be good with "See also" links (unless there will be a split with Eastern Caribbean; I will review them again if that happens).

And finally, in regards to Saint Vincent, what happened to the Grenadines? The full country name is Saint Vincent and the Grenadines...
And for the rest of North America (unless, of course, there is a country I am forgetting):

Countries that need neither "See also" links nor border changes: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Cuba, and Dominican Republic.

Countries that need no border changes and have their proper "See also" links already: Belize, British Honduras, French Colonies, French Guinea (I forogt about this in my South American post), Haiti, and Puerto Rico.

And other countries:
  • Tortola: it is currently not on the map, and has no "See also" links. it should be highlighted in British Virgin Islands's dot, and its "See also" link should include British Virgin Islands.

  • Saint Kitts: it is not on the map yet, and should be highlighted in Saint Knitts and Nevis's area. It also has no "See also" links, so it should be connected to Saint Kitts and Nevis.
  • Nevis: it is not on the map yet, and should be highlighted in Saint Knitts and Nevis's area. In its "See also" links, it has Saint Kitts and Nevis listed twice. One of those should be removed.

  • Saint Barthelemy: it is not on the map yet, and should probably be added to Anguilla's/Montserrat's highlighted area. This place also has no "See also" links, but France should be one of them.
  • Saint Pierre and Mequelon: it is in the correct area, but it has no "See also" links. It should probably be conected to France.
  • Guadeloupe: it need no border changes on the map, but its only "See also" link is with French Colonies. France should be added.

I will not being doing Mexico yet, since Mexico - Revolutionary still needs to be split; I will not be dong Canada yet, since Canadian Provinces still needs to be split; and I will not be doing the United States yet, since United States - Pre-Federal (and the Confederate States of America) still needs to be split.

It looks like nothing from the Mongol States is showing up on the map, and they cover a lot of different areas. Plus, it seems like all of the maps I am seeing have slightly different borders, making this a little hard, but here are all of my observations:
  • Golden Horde: it definitely covers parts of Russia, a lot of Kazakhstan, maybe half of Ukraine, and the top part of Georgia. The Aral Sea looks complete surrounded by this place, meaning a part of Uzbekistan is covered, and it looks like a small part of Turkmenistan as well (though not big enough to include on the map). From what I have read, it seems like the Golden Horde was in Moldova as well.
  • Chagatai, Khanate of seems to completely engulf Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It also covers the bottom part of Kazakhstan, the west part of China, a lot of Uzbekistan, the north-east part of Afghanistan, and the top part of Pakistan. Turkmenistan, Mongolia, and India, might have had some small parts, but they would probably be too small to include in the map.
  • Great Mongol: I can only assume that is the same as the Empire of the Great Khan, since that is the only state that seems to not be listed under Mongol States that I could find on other maps. It seems to cover a lot of China, all of North Korea and South Korea, (practically) all of Mongolia, and the bottom parts of Russia. It seems all of the maps I am looking at seem to have slightly different borders, so this place may have leaked into Vietnam, Myanmar, and Laos, but if so, it would only be the northern tips. It also looks like a few parts may have also been in India, but there does not seem to be a lot.
  • Ilkhanate seems to cover all of Azerbaijan and Armenia, and most of Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Turkey. There is also the top part of Syria and the bottom of Georgia. Tajikistan and Russia also look to have some parts, but I am not sure if they are significant enough to include.

  • It looks like Timurid Empire overlaps a few of the states. It engulfs Iran, Turkmenistan, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. It also looks like it covers most of (if not all of) Georgia, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Pakistan, Iraq, and Kyrgyzstan all have a lot of their areas covered, and Turkey and Kazakhstan probably have enough to be shown on the map. Syria, Russia, China, and India looks like they have small parts (possibly even Kuwait as well), but not enough to include on the map.

And I have no idea what their "See also" links should be.

New Zealand, United Kingdom.

I shall also do one other place in this post:
  • United States: on the map, it is currently highlighted only under the United States. Its oversea territories, which should also be highlighted with the United States, includes American Samoa (not on map yet), Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Here is a dilemma (and the reason I am mentioning this place now): Hawaii. Right now, it does not have a proper dot, but is only highlighted under the United States. I have read some people say that they want Hawaii to be separate, but that I disagree with. It is currently part of the U.S., so it should be highlighted where it is (although, maybe that extra dot should be added for these two countries to be highlighted in). The reason I say that is a dilemma is because:

  • Portugal: right now, it is highlighted in the area of Portugal. That is all good, but...
  • Azores: this is only highlighted in Azores's area, and
  • Madeira Islands: this is only highlighted in Madeira Islands's area. Obviously, the way it is now is pretty accurate; however, Azores and Madeira are not oversea territories of Portugal. They just are part of Portugal. Technically, those two islands should also be highlighted in Portugal's area, as well as in each others' areas.

Now, I do see why those should not be that way (like with Crete's/Greece's area), but if those two remain separate, then Hawaii should get its own area, and not be highlighted in the United States. And if that happens, there will be other islands that this will probably have to happen to (for two Canadian examples, there is Newfoundland, and the eventually-to-be-split Prince Edward Island.

Side note: for "See also" links, Portugal, Azores, and Madeira Islands are all done. And American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands should be added to the "See also" links of the United States. That country is not done though, since it still needs to be split.

  • New Zealand: I think New Zealand owns Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau, so should those three places be also have New Zealand appear when the mouse is hovering over them? I think Tokelau should, but the other two places are self-governing. I am not too sure.
Well, the question is if the territories should be highlighted because they are owned by another nation, or if it uses the same currency and another nation
  • Cook Islands uses the Cook Island Dollar, alongside the New Zealand Dollar
  • Niue uses the New Zealand Dollar, and should therefore be highlighted by the New Zealand Dollar
  • Tokelau uses the New Zealand Dollar, and should therefore be highlighted by the New Zealand Dollar

Citeer: "Sulfur"
  • United Kingdom: it is only highlighted in the United Kingdom, and some dot in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Places that should be added: Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Montserrat, Pitcairn Islands, Saint Helena, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, and British Antarctic Territories.
Well, here I think you are missing the point. The Currency GBP is not being used in most of these territories, and many of them are self-governing states.

These territories uses their own currencies, and should therefore not be highlighted by the Pound Sterling:
  • Anguilla uses the East Carribean Dollar
  • Bermuda uses the Bermudian Dollar
  • Cayman Islands uses the Cayman Island Dollar
  • Montserrat uses the East Caribbean Dollar
  • Saint Helena and Ascension uses the Saint Helena and Ascension Pound, but Tristan Da Cunha uses the Pound Sterling

These territories uses other countries' currencies and should therefore be hghlighted by their currency's respective country:
  • British Virgin Islands uses US Dollar
  • Pitcairn Islands uses the New Zealand Dollar
  • South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands uses the Falkland Island Pound, (and should therefor be highlightened by Falkland Islands?)
  • Turks and Caicos Islands uses the US Dollar

These territoires should probably be highlighted by the Pound Sterling:
  • The Canal Islands, although they have their own pound circulating alongside the Pound Sterling, but the same goes for Scotland which is highlighted by the Pound Sterling

These territories should be highlighted by the Pound Sterling:
  • British Antarctic Territories uses the Pound Sterling and should therefore be also be highlitened by UK.

Questionable cases:
  • Falkland Islands uses the Falkland Island Pound, although it is pegged with, and circulates alongside the Pound sterling
  • Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar Pound, although it is pegged with, and circulates alongside the Pound sterling
Citeer: "ngdawa"Well, the question is if the territories should be highlighted because they are owned by another nation, or if it uses the same currency and another nation
I see it as the former; the area should be highlighted by another country because it is owned by that country. Just like with the example of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, it would be weird to have Falkland Islands highlighted there. Not so much if it was the United Kingdom though, since that country owns those islands.

I see your point, but I'm actually the exact opposite. :P Since we're dealing with coins here it means that my New Zealand coins actually could've been circulating on Tokelau alone, but I can guarantee that my British Pounds never have been spent in a shop in Bermuda, since they're using a totally different currency. So therefore I reckon we should go by currency, and not country.

The Duchy of Lithuania will probably be split eventually, but I will work on these places now anyways.

Firstly, in regards to Kaliningrad, it looks like that area is not connected to Russia, though it probably should be. But because it is not connected, I will treat it as a seporate country. So, with that said, the followig comments are only for the map:
  • Poland and Danzig, Free City of: both of these places are only highlighted in Poland, which means they both do not need any changes.
  • Kraków, Free City of: it is currently not on the map, but it should be highlighted in Poland's area.
  • Poland - Kingdom: this place is also not on the map yet, but it came before the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. From the maps I have seen, this place should be highlighted in both Poland and Ukraine.

The three Polish Partitions are not on the map yet, but:
  • Austrian Partition of Poland: this should be highlighted in Poland. It looks like there may have been a little in Ukraine as well, but not enough to include in the map.
  • Prussian Partition of Poland: this should also be included in Poland's area. From what I have seen, the area misses Kaliningrad, and there may have been some parts in Lithuania and Belarus, but those areas would be too small to include.
  • Russian Partition of Poland: again, this place should also be highlighted in Poland. It looks like a little may have been in Lituania and Ukraine, but not enough to include.

  • Polish-Lithuaian Commonwealth: this area is only highlighted in Poland and Lithuania, but it looks like this area covered all of Kaliningrad, Belarus, and Latvia. It also covered most of Ukraine, and around half of Estonia. There was also some areas in Moldova and Russia, but not enough to include on the map.
  • Lithuania: this area needs no changes to the map.

And just because:
  • Kaliningrad: places highlighted in this area include Germany - 1871-1948, German Notgeld, Soviet Union, and Russia. It looks like Russia - Empire did not control this area, so I have no comments about this place.

And for "See also" links:
  • Poland: it is currently connected to German States, Germany - 1871-1948, and Poland. Places that should be added include: Kraków - Free City, Poland - Kingdom, Austrian Partition of Poland, Prussian Partition of Poland, and Russian Partition of Poland. And Russia - Empire should also be added.
  • Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: its only "See also" links are Poland and Lithuania. Poland - Kingdom, Austrian Partition of Poland, Prussian Partition of Poland, and Russian Partition of Poland should be added, and Belarus and Ukraine probably should be as well.
  • Danzig: its current "See also" links are to German States, Germany 1871-1948, and Poland. I would think to remove German States, because when that place is done being split, it will probably be pointless to include there anyways.

And all of these places have no "See also" links:
  • Poland - Kingdom: Poland and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth should be added.
  • Austrian Partition of Poland: Poland, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Austria - Habsburg should all be added. The Prussian Partition of Poland and the Russian Partition of Poland should also probably be added.
  • Prussian Partition of Poland: Poland, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Prussia - Kingdom should all be added. The Austrian Partition of Poland and the Russian Partition of Poland should also probably be added.
  • Russian Partition of Poland: Poland, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Russia - Empire should all be added. The Prussian Partition of Poland and the Austrian Partition of Poland should also probably be added.

Now, I am a little unsure about Kraków, Free City of. The time it existed, when it minted coins, was between the times of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Poland. I am not sure if that means this place does not need any "See also" links, or should just be linked to Poland, or maybe something else...

  • And Lithuania: it is currently connected to both the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Soviet Union. Russia - Empire should be added.

And these three places all have correct borders on the map, but in regards to their "See also" links:
  • Belarus: its only "See also" link is to the Soviet Union. Russia - Empire and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth should probably be included.
  • Ukraine: same as above. Its only "See also" link is to the Soviet Union. Russia - Empire and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth should probably be included. EDIT: Crimea should also be added.
Done: Costa Rica

These places all have correct borders on the map, so these comments are only towards the countries' "See also" links:
  • Crimea: it has no "See also" links, but Ukraine, Russia - Empire, and Ottoman Empire should all probably be added.

  • Moldova: it is connected to Transnistria, Moldavia and Wallachia, and Soviet Union. The singular Moldavia should be added, and so should Russia - Empire.
  • Transnistria: it is only connected to Moldova, which should be good.
  • Romania: its only "See also" link is the combined place of Moldavia and Wallachia. The seporate Moldavia and seporate Wallachia should both be added.

  • Wallachia: it is connected to Romania, Moldavia and Wallachia, and Moldavia. The singular Moldavia should be removed.
  • Moldavia: it is connected to Wallachia, Romania, Moldavia and Wallachia, and Moldova. The singular Wallachia should be removed.

And then there is this place:
  • Moldavia and Wallachia: for its borders, it is only highlighted in Romania. Moldova should also be highlighted. And in regards to its "See also" links, it is only connected to Moldova and Romania. The singular Moldavia and singular Wallachia should both be added.

Now, to move up a little higher in Europe. All of these places have correct borders on the map, so these comments are for their "See also" links:
  • Slovakia: it is only connected to Czechoslovakia, which should be good.

  • Czech Republic: its "See also" links are to Czechoslovakia and Bohemia and Moravia. Bohemia - Royal Mint should be added.
  • Bohemia and Moravia: it is connected to Kingdom of Bohemia, Czech Republic, and Czechoslovakia. Right now, the Kingdom of Bohemia is an empty link, since that country has been split. So, that should be removed, and Bohemia - Royal Mint should be added.
  • Czechoslovakia: its "See also" links are to Slovakia, Czech Republic, Bohemia and Moravia, Kingdom of Bohemia, Austria - Habsburg, and Moravia. Like above, Kingdom of Bohemia should be removed, and Bohemia - Royal Mint should be added. Moravia has also been split, so it too should also be removed. But I am not sure what to replace it with, since there is no Moravia - Royal Mint...
  • Mexico: on the map, its borders are correct. Its only "See also" link is to Mexico - Revolutionary, but there are no coins under that place. And because there are only ten sub-sections, all of these places should be added to Mexico's "See also" links: Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Durango, Estado de Mexico, Guerrero, Jalisco, Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla, and Sinaloa.

  • And in regards to those ten places, I will assume none are on the map yet. All should be highlighted in Mexico's area, and for their "See also" links, all should be linked together (and Mexico should be added to each one as well).

And back to Europe:
  • Switzerland: on the map, it has correct borders. Its only "See also" link it to the Swiss Cantons, but that is an empty link. Now, adding each individual canton would be... long, so until a system for that can be found, I am not sure what to do with this place's "See also" links.

  • Every single Swiss Canton: from what I have seen, each canton was located inside Switzerland, so each place should be highlighted in Switzerland. But again, I am not sure what to do with their "See also" links.
Hi guys!

I can see you're putting a lot of work into this. I don't want to be the party pooper, haha, but before you spend more efforts on this, let me share a few thoughts with you. Hope you're not hating me now, I don't intend to sabotage you in any way! :) Your efforts and dedication is of course appreciated.

I'm simply wondering where all this is leading. Empires came and went, they started small, grew, expanded in this direction or the other, then declined and disappeared. Borders were revised, territories changed their owners multiple times. Historical empires included sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller chunks of a multitude of modern nations, some for a short timespan and others for a long while. Highlighting each empire on each modern country just makes everything extremely complicated ...

There's a lot of overlap on the Balkans for example. Most countries there formed part of (Habsburg) Austria, Hungary, (Ottoman) Turkey, the Byzantine Empire, Rome, Yugoslavia, (First and Second Empires of) Bulgaria, (Nemanjic) Serbia, Venice and/or Italy at some point. Do you really want your map to highlight all these countries/empires on Bosnia? What is the point of anyone's map suggesting them that they have a million coins from Bosnia when in reality it's just two? And what exactly is the connection between all these lost empires and a country that has been around for 25 years and may not want to be related to any of them?

Honestly, I don't see why the Russian Empire should be reflected on countries that were not key to Russia's identity as a (Russian-speaking, Slavic, Orthodox Christian) nation state that had its roots in Muscovy and its core around Moscow or St. Petersburg but certainly not in Tajikistan (which has only ever been under Russian imperial rule for a couple of decades in centuries of Russian history anyway). Sure, Russian coins circulated there but let's not forget that in the days of silver- and gold-pegged currencies, pretty much anything made of precious metal was accepted almost anywhere. ;) Spanish pesos circulated in Ming China, Habsburg thalers in Arabia and British Indian rupees in eastern Africa.

Maybe a simpler and more transparent approach would be if we went by the capital or core region. When I hear "Byzantine", I think Constantinople -> Turkey, Russian Empire -> Moscow/St. Petersburg -> modern Russia, etc., not Albania or Turkmenistan respectively. Do you what I mean?

It's just a suggestion of course. I'm eager to hear what you think. :)

And what exactly is the connection between all these lost empires and a country that has been around for 25 years and may not want to be related to any of them?

agree 100%! i've trying to make similar points before, but you've put in much more effort tl explain it better.
Perhaps, if the map had a time dimension, this would make more sense.

Maybe a checkbox could be added. When toggled off, it would show all issuers that ever existed. When toggled on, it would display a year slider and moving it would filter the countries shown to just those that existed at the time.

That would be a good idea. That would be hard to implement though I'm sure. One other solution would be to have two maps. One showing all empires/nations in that modern day country, and one showing just coins from that modern-day nation. So for example Belarus would not be shown on the second map if you only have Soviet coins. It would be a nice feature for those that are trying to get one coin from each country.

In the mean time, here are some more countries. There comments are only towards map changes:
  • Places that do not need any map changes include: Myanmar, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

  • India - British: right now, it is highlighted in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Both Myanmar's and Sri Lanka's areas should be included.
  • India (Ancient): It is only highlighted in India, but both Pakistan and Bangladesh should also be highlighted.

And for "See also" links:
  • India - British: it has a few "See also" links already, but both Ceylon and Myanmar should be added. Indian States should probably be removed, since that place will eventually be completely split, making that link useless.
  • India (Ancient): its only "See also" link is to India. I am not sure what other links it should have though; I would suggest Indian States, but with them being split, I am not sure...

  • Myanmar: it has no "See also" links, but British - India should be added.
  • Pakistan and Bangladesh: both are already only connected to India - British, and India - Mughal Empire should probably be added to both.
  • Afghanistan: it is only connected to Islamic States, which should probably be removed, since that place will be split. And India - Mughal Empire should probably be added.

And:
  • Liechtenstein and San Marino: these two countries both look done.
Done map-checking: Nabataean Kingdom, Egypt (Ancient), Lombard Kingdom, Etruria, Mauretania (Ancient), Numidia, Visigoth Kingdom, Kingdom of the Gepids, Suibe Kingdom, Vandal Kingdom

And on to some ancient areas. I will not work on any of these places' "See also" links, since I am not that experienced in ancient countries, so all of these comments are for the map. Firstly:
  • Ostrogothic Kingdom: it is currently highlighted in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. From what I have seen, there was some areas in Serbia, but not enough to include on the map; I would think to remove that place. And countries with areas that should be added: Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Austria. There were also areas in France, Germany, and Hungary, but it does not look like enough to include any of them.

And all of these places are not on the map yet:
  • Indo-Parthian Kingdom: this should be highlighted in Pakistan and Afghanistan. There were also some parts in India, but those parts are too small to include.

And for some ancient areas already on the map:
  • Mesopotamia (Ancient): this is only highlighted in Iraq, but it looks like Syria should be highlighted as well. It may have also been in Kuwait, but based on the maps I have seen, I would say to leave that country un-highlighted.

I would think the point of including those places is because they were part of the areas of those different kingdoms. I mean, some of those places were quite large, and I do not see the point in hiding how big they were. Same goes for some more modern places, in my opinion: if they were really big, they should probably be shown as such. :D
Citeer: "Sulfur"I would think the point of including those places is because they were part of the areas of those different kingdoms. I mean, some of those places were quite large, and I do not see the point in hiding how big they were. :D

Doesn't that depend on the point of time you're looking at? Justinian's Byzantine Empire was huge while the Byzantine Empire in its final throes was a petty kingdom.

Anyway, the point I tried to make is that highlighting historical states on ALL modern nations whose territory they may have controlled at some point (not necessarily all the time!) just makes everything super complicated. Borders changed all the time and sometimes drastically. For some pre-modern polities, it's hard to determine accurately how big they even were.
Citeer: "Coinman48"I think this is a greater issue than border accuracy.

I see São Tomé and Príncipe is still on the list of the places that need updates, so I will just include the quote above. Here is a picture of what is happening with that country:

The dots highlighted red are both showing São Tomé and Príncipe; however, only the large one should be
highlighted. The tiny one above that belongs to Equatorial Guinea. And for "See also" links, São Tomé and Príncipe has none, but Portugal should be added.

It definitely depends on which time one is looking at, but with only one map, that would be impossible to represent. With that in mind, doing multiple maps for different periods of times would be helpful, but creating so many maps would (probably) be extremely hard to do. Now, rather than just highlighting the smallest possible area, I have always thought to highlight some of the largest ones (and I still think that; the odds of that changing are very slim).

I know this would have been the second time I said this in this thread, but... agree to disagree? That saying sure comes in handy sometimes. :D
Citeer: "Sulfur"I know this would have been the second time I said this in this thread, but... agree to disagree? That saying sure comes in handy sometimes. :D

Sure, no problem. It's not THAT important to me anyway. :) Although I'm still a little bit puzzled why hovering over Finland shows me 100 years of Finnish independence and a little over 100 years of Russian rule while 700 years of Swedish rule are ignored ... ;)
Hello, shouldn't Namibia be included as part of South Africa? They didn't achieve independence until 1990.
So, Malaysia is cut in half, as depicted below:

I have mentioned this previously, but seeing as how it was never fixed, I will just assume it would never be. So, the yellow area will be Malaysia1, and the blue area will be Malaysia2. With that considered, these are only comments towards the map:
  • Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, and Cocos (Keeling) Islands: all are highlighted in the areas they should be.
  • Sarawak and North Borneo: both are highlighted in Malaysia2, which should be good.

  • Malaya: it is highlighted in both Malaysia1 and Singapore, which is correct.
  • Malaya and British Borneo: It is highlighted in Malaysia1/2, Singapore, and Brunei; everything is correct here.

  • Straits Settlements: it is highlighted in Malaysia1 and Singapore. Cocos (Keeling) Islands should also be highlighted.
  • Malay Peninsula: this is highlighted in both Malaysia1 and Singapore. Now, this place also covered the bottom part of Thailand. As compared to Thailand, the area was not big, but it sure looked like a lot of the Malay Peninsula was there. But I would not think to change this country's area; it will end up being split, so I shall not deal with this area yet.

  • British East Indies: it is only highlighted in Indonesia, and that is... not right. Indonesia should be un-highlighted, and the places that should be include are Malaysia1/2, Singapore, and Brunei.

And in regards to "See also" links... these places all have very interconnecting links, so I will not be doing those (yet).
Done: Pitcairn Islands, British Indian Ocean Territories, Gibraltar, Jersey, Isle of Man, Guernsey, Alderney, Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Saint Helena and Ascension, Tristan de Cunha, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, Windward Islands, French Polynesia, French Oceania
And on to the areas of the Low Countries. All of these comments are only for map changes:
  • Netherlands: it is only highlighted under Netherlands's area; however, the Kingdom of the Netherlands also includes Aruba, Curacao, and Sint Maarten. The last place still does not have a dot on the map yet though. And even if the decision about what will happen to oversea territories is that they will not be highlighted, I would still think to include those three islands; they are part of the Netherlands. The oversea territories of this place includes Bonaire, Saba, and Saint (Sint?) Eustatius, so whatever happens to areas of the United Kingdom should happen with these places. Of course, that will have to happen when (and in some cases if) those dots are created.
  • Belgium and Luxembourg: neither place needs changes on the map.

  • Austrian Netherlands: this place is highlighted in both Belgium and Luxembourg, which should be good.
  • Burgundian Netherlands and Spanish Netherlands: both places are highlighted in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. It looks like both places also took up the northern area of France, though that would not be ig enough to include on the map, meaning both places are done.

  • Frisia: it is only highlighted in the Netherlands, which should be good. It looks like there was also a small part in Germany, but it would be too small to include.
  • Liege, Prince-Bishopric of: it is only highlighted in Belgium, which should be good.

And none of these places are on the map yet:
  • Brabant, Duchy of: this should be highlighted in both Belgium and the Netherlands.
  • Guelders, Duchy of: the Netherlands should be highlighted.
  • Holland, County of: this place should also only be highlighted in the Netherlands's area.
  • Flanders of Low Countries, County of: this should be highlighted in Belgium.
  • Stavelot-Malmedy, Imperial Abbey of: this should also be highlighted in Belgium.
  • Hainaut, County of: and this place should also be highlighed in Belgium. It looks like there was also a bit in France, but not enough to include on the map.

And for "See also" links:
  • Netherlands: it is conected to Netherlands Antilles, Aruba, BES Islands, Curacao, Frisia, Dutch Republic, and Spanish Netherlands. Burgundian Netherlands and Austrian Netherlands should both be added, and so should Sint Maarten, Saint/Sint Eustatius, Netherlands East Indies, and Netherlands West Indies.
  • Belgium: it is connected to Low Countries Feudal, Spanish Netherlands, and Austrian Netherlands. Burgundian Netherlands should be added, while Low Countries Feudal should be removed (it is an empty link, since that place has been split).
  • Luxembourg: its only "See also" link is to Spanish Netherlands. Burgudian Netherlands and Austrian Netherlands should both be added.

  • Burgundian Netherlands: it is connected to Belgium, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austrian Netherlands, Dutch Republic, Low Countries Feudal, and Spanish Netherlands. Austrian Netherlands and Netherlands should be added, while one Belgium and Low Countries Feudal should be removed
  • Spanish Netherlands: it is connected to Belgium, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austrian Netherlands, Dutch Republic, Low Countries Feudal, and Burgundian Netherlands. Same comments as above: Austrian Netherlands and Netherlands should be added, while one Belgium and Low Countries Feudal should be removed.
  • Austrian Netherlands: Belgium, Belgium, Spanish Netherlands, and Dutch Republic are its "See also" links. One Belgium should be removed, and places that should be added include Burgundian Netherlands, Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

Now, for the low countries, only three have places in their "See also" links:
  • Flanders of Low Countries, Country of: County of Flanders of Feudal France.
  • Frisia: Dutch Republic and Netherlands.
  • Liege, Prince-Bishopric of: Belgium, Austrian Netherlands, and Spanish Netherlands.
There are only eight places under Low Countries, so all could easily be added to each other, as well as Netherlands, Belgium, and Burgundia/Spanish/Austrian Netherlands where applicable. But when the Dutch Republic is split, I feel like some of those places (specifically Netherlands) will get quite crowded with their "See also" links. So I am not sure what to do with these places...

And I will not be doing the Dutch Republic until sometime after that place is split.
Citeer: "Sulfur"
  • Netherlands: it is only highlighted under Netherlands's area; however, the Kingdom of the Netherlands also includes Aruba, Curacao, and Sint Maarten
  • Belgium and Luxembourg: neither place needs changes on the map.

The Kingdom of the United Netherlands also included modern Belgium.

Luxembourg was attached to the Netherlands in a personal union 1815-1890. The medieval and late medieval territory of Luxembourg was at least four times bigger than today and included significant parts of Belgium and smaller parts of France and Germany. It was a member of the Holy Roman Empire (i.e. a German state) before 1805 and of the German Confederation until 1866.
Done: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador

And just a few more...
  • Central Africa (BEAC): it is highlighted in Chad, Central African Republic, Congo - Republic, Gabon, Cameroon, and Equatorial Africa, which is all correct. For "See also" links, it is connected to French Equatorial Africa, Equatorial African States, and Equatorial Guinea. Places that should be added include: Chad, Central African Republic, Congo - Republic, Gabon, and Cameroon.

  • Central American Republic: it has the same "See also" links as the places it is highlighted in, which includes Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. All of those are good, meaning this place is done. But...

  • Brittany, Duchy of: on the map, it is only highlighted in France, which is good. And for its "See also" links, it is connected to both France - Feudal* and France - Kingdom, which should be good, meaning this place is done.

Now, the reason I put an asterisk on France - Feudal is because that place has been split. But now, on the Country List, that link is clickable. So, with areas with a lot of sub-sections (like German States or France - Feudal), should those areas not be connected to the individual states/areas? I do kind of miss the fact that, when an area was fully split, the link could not be clicked (since that is when I knew a place was fully split). But if that is not temporary, then that would definitely be a solution to those very extensive areas.

And on a side note, I will probably be taking a break from this until the map gets updated. I know some of the places that still need to be checked (ignoring states that have been/are being split), but I am probably forgetting about some, which I may prefer to do before the states. :)
Or I can get bored and keep on going.
  • Italy: its borders are correct, and for "See also" links, it is only connected to Italian States. Vatican City should probably be added. Depending on what happens to countries with a lot of sub-sections, this place may be done.
  • Vatican City: its borders are correct, and its only "See also" link is to Italian States. That should probably be removed and replaced with Papal States and Roman Republic. Italy should also probably be added as well.
  • Monaco: it has correct borders, and with "See also" links, it is connected to both France and Italian States. Italian States should probably be removed and replaced with Sardinia - Kingdom.

I believe all of the Italian states have been split, so I checked all fifty-six of them. And I will just assume that none of them are on the map yet, since the only one I have (Lombardy-Venetia) is not on it yet. But to sum up practically every state all at once: every single one of them should be highlighted in only Italy, aside from the six mentioned below:
  • Gorizia, County of: this should be highlighted in Italy, and also in Slovenia. It looks like this place was pretty small (with a few areas not connected to each other), but the areas look pretty evenly split between the two countries.
  • Papal States and Roman Republic: in addition to being highlighted in Italy, Vatican City should also be highlighted.
  • Sardinia, Kingdom of: along with Italy, Monaco should be highlighted.

  • Avignon, Archbishopric of: I actually cannot find this place. I mean, I can find one that was in France, but not in Italy. So... this place has not been checked.
  • Corsica, Republic of: this should be highlighted only in France, since it is that one French island in the Mediterranean Sea. Seeing as how places like Azores and Crete are, I think it would make sense to split the island so Corscia can be highlighted there, and not in the rest of France. But if that happens, the two Italian islands (Sicily and Sardinia) should also be considered to be split. And maybe also that Spanish one (for the Vandal Kingdom).

And here are just some general comments that may change places from only be highlighted in Italy (if the islands do end up getting split):
  • Cagliari: it looks like this was only in Sardinia, so if that island gets seporated, I should mention this.
  • Sardinia, Kingdom of: this was not just in the current island of Sardinia, but also main-land Italy.
  • Genoa, Republic of: this also included that French island I mentioned above, so I am mentioning this in case that does end up getting split. Otherwise, this area had some small areas in France not significant enough to include on the map.
  • Sicily, Kingdom of: in both Sicily and main-land Italy.
  • Two Sicilies, Kingdom of the: in both Sicily and main-land Italy.

And none of these should affect any borders, but I will mention them anyways:
  • Lombardy, Kingdom of and Milan, Duchy of: they may have had some parts in Switzerland, but not enough to include on the map.
  • Savoy, Duchy of: it looks like there were some small parts in France and Switzerland, but not enough to include in the map.
  • Venice, Republic of: a small area was in Slovenia, and a longer area in Croatia. But with Croatia, it looked like it was mainly just the islands on the sea, and a smaller strip of land on the main-land. But that is probably not enough to include.

And for "See also" links for the Italian States:
  • Papal States and Roman Republic should be connected to Vatican City, but this place is not fully done.
  • Sardinia, Kingdom of should be connected to Monaco, but this place is not fully done.

And that is all I shall say with the Italian States' "See also" links. At least until something can be figured out with them. I mean, all should be connected to Italy, but should all be connected to the general 'Italian States' one as well?
Citeer: "Sulfur"

1) Avignon: I guess this place is listed as an "Italian" state because Avignon was a Papal enclave for many centuries (the Popes even resided there for a while). However, the full territory of Avignon was annexed into France during the Frenc Revolution.

2) Sardinia/Monaco: Monaco has never belonged to Sardinia. It was a vassal under the kings of Piedmont-Sardinia in the early/mid 19th century but it also was a vassal of France and Spain at some point (for a much longer time, actually). Monaco first emerged as a break-away state from Genova (Italy), so it should definitely be listed under "Italian states". I don't see a reason though why it should be linked with Sardinia (or France or Spain).

Oh, I see. I guess what I thought a Protectorate was not at all correct. z|

So scratch all those comments of mine for Sardinia/Monaco. But, if Monaco started as a break-away state of Genova (Genoa, Republic of), then Genoa should probably be highlighted there. So I guess, in regards to Sardinia's/Monaco's comments mentioning each other, just replace all Sardinias with Genoas.

Protectorate is indeed the right word, not vassal, sorry for that. :)

And yes, I guess it makes more sense to link Monaco with Genoa although I don't think Genoa should be highlighted on Monaco in the map since Monaco was barely more than a Genoese border fort for a couple of decades in the 13th century.
Time for some more places. This one will be a little longer, and all of these comments are only in regards to the map:
  • German Democratic Republic, Germany - Federal Republic, and Saarland: all are only highlighted in Germany, which is be good.

  • German Notgeld: I will not be doing this place yet.
  • Germany - 1871 - 1948: and I will not be doing this until this place gets split.

Now, it looks like all of the German States have been split, totalling out too... a lot (an online counter says 380, but my count comes to 379). So, I will try to do all of those in one post, meaning this will contain a little over thirty percent of all issuers currenty on Numista. And I see some are already on the map, but I have not tested any of them.

Rather than just listing out ever state, I will group all by starting letter. I will also avoid saying which places have small areas in certain countries if the area is too insignificant, unless they place should not be only highlighted in Germany (just to save some space). So...

All 19 A's should be highlighted in Germany.

All 47 B's should be highlighted in only Germany except for:
  • Bavaria, Duchy of: this should be in both Germany and Austria. Not enough is in Italy or Slovenia to include those two places.
  • Besançon, Free Imperial City of: this should be in France.
  • Brandenburg, Margraviate of: this should be in both Germany and Poland.
  • Bradenburg-Prussia: this was in Germany, Poland, and Kaliningrad. Some parts were in Lithuania and the Netherlands, but it would not be enough to include on the map.
  • Braunau, City of: this was in Austria.
  • Breslau, Prussian Bishopric of: this was in Poland.

  • Brandenburg-Küstrin, Margraviate of: I am not exactly sure about this place. The majority was in Germany, so it should obviously be highlighted there. But there was also a little bit in Poland, which I would normally say is not enough to include on the map, but that was the Küstrin part. So... maybe this place should be given an exception?

All 7 C's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Cammin, Bishopric of: it looks like this was in Poland.
  • Colmar, City of: this was in France.

All 7 D's should be highlighted in Germany.

All 13 E's should be highlighted in only Germany except for:
  • Eastern Prussia, Russian occupation of: rather than being highlighted in Germany, this place should be highlighted in Poland and Kaliningrad. A little bit was in Lithuania, but not enough to include on the map.
  • Eger, Royal Mint of: I doubt this was the Eger in Hungary, so is this the same as Egerland? if so, It should be in the Czech Republic.

All 13 F's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Freising, Bishopric of: this should be in Germany, Austria, and Slovenia. This place had a few small areas all spread out, but the biggest areas seem to be in those three countries.
  • Fugger-Zinnenburg-Wörth, County of: I cannot seem to find this area, so this place is not done.

All 7 G's should be highlighted in Germany

All 34 H's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Hagenau, City of: this was in France.
  • Holstein-Shauenburg, County of: this should be in both Germany and Denmark (Holstein was in Germany, while Schauenburg was half in Germany, half in Denmark).

  • Also, Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schilingfürst, Earldom of: this was only in Germany, but should Schilingfürst be spelt with two L's, or is it correct with just one?

All 3 I's and all 3 J's should be highlighted in Germany.

All 12 K's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Knyphausen, Dominion of: I cannot find this area, so this place is not done.
  • Kolberg, City of: this was in Poland.

All 23 L's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Leiningen-Dagsburg: I cannot seem to find this place.
  • Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort, Earldom of: this was in both Germany and Belgium (the Rochefort part being in Belgium).
  • Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort, Principality of: in both Germany and Belgium.
  • Lower Lusatia, Margravate of: this should be in Germany, and there was probably enough in Poland to include it in that county as well.

All 36 M's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Montfort, Earldom of: I cannot find this place.
  • Mulhouse, Free Imperial City of: this was in France.
  • Murbach & Lüders, Imperial abbeys of: this was also in France.

All 12 N's should be highlighted in Germany.

All 10 O's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Offenburg, Strassburg bishopric mint of: it looks like Offenburg was in Germany, but Strassburg was in France. I am not exactly sure why Strassburg is mentioned in this place's name though. Were the coins just minted there, and only used in Offenburg?

All 20 P's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Pfirt, Earldom of: it looks like this was in France.
  • Pomerania, Duchy of: this should be in both Germany and Poland
  • Pomerania, Swedish Possession of: also in both Germany and Poland
  • Pomerania-Stettin, Duchy of: also in both Germany and Poland
  • Prussia, Duchy of: this should be highlighted in Poland and Kaliningrad. Some was also in Lithuania, but not enough to include.
  • Prussia, Kingdom of: this should be highlighted in Germany, Poland, and Kaliningrad. Some parts were in Denmark, France, and Lithuania, but not enough to include on the map.

The 1 Q should be highlighted in Germany.

All 18 R's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Rhine, Confederation of the: this should be in both Germany and Liechtenstein. It does not look like there was enough in Austria, and definitely not enough in Poland, to include those two places.

All 60 S's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Schleswig and Holstein, Danish duchies of: this should be in Germany and Denmark.
  • Schleswig-Holstein, Provisional government of: also in both Germany and Denmark.
  • Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, Duchy of: also in both Germany and Denmark.
  • Schleswig-Holstein-Norburg-Plön, Duchy of: and also in both Germany and Denmark.
  • Selz, Abbey of: this was in France.
  • Silesia, Prussian Rule of: this should be highlighted in Poland.
  • Stargard, City of: also Poland.
  • Stettin, City of: also Poland.
  • Strasbourg, Bishopric of: this was in France.
  • Strasbourg, City of: this was also in France.
  • Strasbourg, Royal and Imperial Mint of: and this was also in France.

All 7 T's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Thann, City of: this should be in France.
  • Treptow, City of: this should be in Poland.

All 6 U's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Upper Alsace, Landgravaite of: this should be highlighted in France.
  • Upper Lusatia, Margravate of: this should be in both Germany and Poland.

The 2 V's should both be highlighted in Germany.

All 28 W's should be highlighted in Germany except for:
  • Weissenburg, Abbey of: is it the one in France or in Germany?
  • Weissenburg, City of: same as above: is it the one in France or in Germany? I guess it would also be possible for this to be in a different country then the one above...
  • Württemberg-Montbéliard, County of: this should be in both Germany and France.
  • Württemberg-Oels, Duchy and Prussian Rule of: it looks like the Duchy of Oels was in Poland, but I cannot seem to find this specific place.

There are no X's, no Y's, and the only Z should be highlighted in Germany.

Now, the reason I stated how many of each number there are is in case another German State gets added before the map is updated. If another state does appear, it will be slightly easier for me to figure out what it is.

East Africa should also have Somaliland linked - as the East African Shilling was once in circulation there when Somaliland was the British Somaliland Protectorate.

The Somaliland Shilling is also a descendant currency as much as the Kenyan, Tanzanian, & Ugandan Shillings are.

Also:
  • Canada, Canadian Provinces, and Newfoundland all have their "See also" links connected to each other, and are all highlighted in Canada. All of these places are done (until the Canadian provinces gets split, at least).

  • Hungary: this place is highlighted in Hungary, which is good. It has no "See also" links, but since there are over ten Hungarian states listed, I am not sure what is to be done with linking them together.

Done map-checking: Hungarian states Buda - City, Cattaro - City, Hermannstadt - City, Kronstadt - City, Nagybánya - City, Selmecbánya - City, Slavonia - Province, Spalato - City, Transylvania - Principality, Batthyány - Counts, Esterházy - Counts, Severin - Banate, Serbia - Hungarian possession
  • Spain: has correct borders on the map. Its "See also" link is to Spanish states, which have been split. There are more than ten states, so I am not sure what to do with that.

Firstly, in regards to two places from France - Feudal:
  • Cahors, Bishopric and City of: the "Bishopric and City of" part of the name should be italicized.

And on to the rest of France:
  • French Notgeld: this is only highighted in France, which I would say is fine for now. This place will probably get split though, so it may eventually need to be re-done. For its "See also" links, it is only connected to France, which I think is good.

France:
  • Done map-checking.
  • For France's "See also" links, it is connected to French Notgeld, France - Kingdom, French colonies, and France - Feudal. Those places like Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Martinique, Reunion, and French Guiana should all probably be added. Maybe keeping those places as "See also" links would be better than keeping France highlighted in them? And with France - Feudal being split, I will say this place's "See also" links are not done.

These two places are as done as possible right now. With some dots not yet existing on the map, and with their being a character limit for "See also" links, I will still leave their descriptions here:
  • Danish West Indies: its only "See also" link is to Denmark, which should be good. This place was located in the United States Virgin Islands, which is not on the country list and does not have its own dot. Right now, the Danish West Indies is only highlighted in Peurto Rico's dot.

  • British West Indies: its only "See also" link is to the United Kingdom, and on the map, it is only highlighted in the United Kingdom. It is definitely in the wrong place on the map. These were all the places that were part of the British West Indies, although not all of these places are on the map yet: Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, the Leeward Islands (Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Montserrat, and Saint Kitts and Nevis), and the Windward Islands (Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent). So I guess all those places should be highlighted, and they should also be added to this place's "See also" links.

Central Asia: this place is not on the map yet. It may eventually get split, there are few areas with similar borders, so I will do the mapping of this place as a whole:
  • Sogdian dynasty: this should be in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan (there is not that much area in Uzbekistan, but its capital is there). There was not enough areas in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, or Kyrgysztan to include those places.
  • Emirate of Bukhara: this was also in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. There was not enough in Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, or Afghanistan to include those places on the map.
  • Khanate of Khiva: this should be in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. There was not enough in Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, or Iran to include those places on the map.
  • Khorezm People's Soviet Republic: this should only be in Uzbekistan; there was not enough in Turkmenistan or Kazakhstan to include those places.

And for some areas I have been putting off, and will continue to put off:
  • Dutch Republic: there are a lot of places, so I will not be doing this until this until it gets split.
  • German Notgeld: same as above; I will not be doing this place yet.
  • Germany - 1871-1948: this place's area varied between the Empire of Germany, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich. It is currently highlighted in Germany, Poland, and Kaliningrad, but I will not be doing this place until it (hopefully) gets split. That way, for example, only the Third Reich would appear in Austria.
  • Indian States and Kingdoms: this place is currently being split, so I will not be doing it.
  • Islamic States: same as above; I will not be doing this place yet.

  • Poland, Duchies of: the two duchies listed should only by highlighted in Poland, but I am not sure if more will eventually be added, so this place is not done.

Done map-checking: Batavian Republic, Holland - Kingdom
Hello,
In order to make this post a bit more usable for others than Sulfur and Pejounet :D, I would suggest users who write something in the thread edit their posts once the work was done. Same for team who do the job.
It is quite difficult to know what was and what was not settled.
Thanks.
Quand l'Histoire et la Géographie se croisent sur nos pièces de monnaie ...
Good idea. I will see what I can do. :D

(For now, I will leave the names of the countries that are done, but delete the descriptions, just so it is known that those places are done.)
Thanks !

A comment: I think the landgraviate of Upper Alsace should be linked to both France and Austria.

I agree. I done Sulfur requests up to Mongol states. I will have more time for this tommorow. <:D

It looks like an October 22, 2017 post is where the last updates were from, for a reference as to where to scroll to. The places of China have been updated, but not Poland - Kingdom (the post after). I will leave any post I made about Central America before that point though. There are still some places that need dots to be created for them. ;)
Done: Swedish Livonia, Duchy of Livonia, Livonian Order, Bishopric of Dorpat, Archbishopric of Riga, Bishopric of Courland, Duchy of Courland, Danish Estonia, City of Reval, City of Narva, Bishopric of Ösel–Wiek, Estonia, Livonia and Estonia

Courland & Livonia are both now part of Latvia.

This thread is a mess. B.

I just done Bohemia/Moravia/Silesia. These can be deleted from the thread - PLEASE Sulfur!!

I also done Russian principalities, Kievan Rus, Austrian States.

You can also check for lines where you say everything is ok and delete those as well:
Saint-Pierre and Miquelon
Isle of Man
Malaya
Belgium and Luxembourg
Austrian Netherlands
Frisia
Liege, Prince-Bishopric of

Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Russian Principalities, Kievan Rus', and Austian States comments deleted.

I hesitate at deleting the comments that say there are no changes needed for some countries though. While no changes are needed, if the list at the top of the page gets updated, pejounet would need to know those places have actually been checked to remove them from the list.

Either way, I edited the comments about Isle of Man and Saint Pierre and Miquelon to say they are done. Aside from Malaya, unless I miss-read something, there are changes needed for the other places' "See also" links (and I do not think I did any of those links for Malaysia or the places under it).

But now I must ask: would there be a way I can help organize everything, or at least make these modifications go a little smoother?
Hello,
Is it impossible to have issuers show up on several places ? Or is it a strik decision ?
I just found out that Upper Alsace, Further Austria and Burgau had disappeared from Austria when one scrolls over the map.
They could be, the first both in France and Austria, the others in German States and Austria.
Cheers,
A.
Quand l'Histoire et la Géographie se croisent sur nos pièces de monnaie ...
Do you happen to have maps of those three places? I remember not being able to find any easy-to-read ones for Upper Alsace and Further Austria, and I cannot seem to find any for the Margraviate of Burgau either. I based my decision of where the first two should be placed based on the descriptions of the areas mentioned, and may have done the same for Burgau. I will search for the maps tomorrow when I have some free time, but...

Upper Alsace: while this place was ruled by the Habsburgs, I cannot seem to find any evidence that there was property of this place in Austria. It seems like it was just located in modern-day Alsace, which is in France.

Further Austria: this was also ruled by the Habsburgs, but this place did have areas in France, Germany, and Austria. I was actually surprised to see there was some property in Austria because, as the name says, the area is like Austria, but farther away. Reading the descriptions of the geography on Wiki, the main places were in France, with scattered areas in Upper Swabia (Germany) and Vorarlberg (Austria). looking at the whole of Vorarlberg, it is small compared to the rest of Austria, so Further Austria's scattered territories in there would not be big enough to highlight the entirety of Austria on the map. Same goes for its German locations.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Further_Austria

Burgau: I am only finding this territory to be in Bavaria (Germany). While it was part of the Habsburg rule, I cannot find any evidence that there was territory in Austria.

But it is late where I am. I am going to sleep now, and will do some more careful reading tomorrow. And maybe I can find some proper maps then. :Zz:
Why it is needed for user to have Austria highlighted as well when the actual place was in France? In response to a question, there can be two or more places shown.

For Sulfur: - Bohemia post is still there (You can change it to "Done:" and list for Pejounet),.

Spanish states are done. There are some new ones worth checking as well.
Lundy is done.
Pskov republic is done.
Hungarian states are done, including the ones you were unsure of.
